    • St. Petersbourg Hotel: Nothing 5-Star About It

      2.0
      Reviewed 24 August 2019

To put it simply, our experience at the St. Petersbourg Hotel did not meet our expectations for a 5 star luxury hotel that is associated with Hyatt. We have included our rationale below. For starters, the hotel staff was not knowledgeable about basic information related to the hotel and the surrounding area. For example, when we arrived a bit late on a Sunday and asked for recommendations for a quick bite to eat, the front desk agent pointed behind us to the bar, which was clearly closed. When we mentioned the obvious (that it was closed) he/she just said walk around the area and well find something. OK. It was about 9pm on a Sunday and turns out most places in the area were closed. Our baseline expectation for this kind of property would be for the front desk agent to offer a few options that were realistic given the timing situation. After an unsuccessful search, we returned to our room and had almonds and a beer from the minibar. Another example of a lack of basic knowledge of the property was when we asked about the hotels spa/sauna. We were interested in making a reservation for the sauna for the following day, and simply asked how a Finnish sauna worked (after being told that the sauna was a Finnish sauna). The front desk agent said that he/she did not know because he/she did not use it often. Being a small, 22-room hotel, this is something we would expect the front desk staff to know. Our third and last example of unknowledgeable staff is when we asked about transport to the airport. We were told (in an uncertain tone) by the front desk agent that it takes about 30 minutes and is 25-30. This seemed a little high for an airport that we understood to be relatively close, but OK. We returned to our room to check if we could Uber there, and were quoted a fare of ~6 for a 13 min ride. Im not sure if we were trying to be taken advantage of or if it was just a lack of knowledge, but it was definitely frustrating. Secondly, the hotel offers only one amenity - the aforementioned Finnish sauna. You have to make a reservation and its free from 7am - 11am. After 11am, you must pay 15 to use the sauna. For a 5-star luxury hotel with one amenity, we just found the idea of having to pay to use the sauna (the only amenity in the hotel) a bit absurd. We did not try it, because its something we typically enjoy more in the evening to help relax and unwind. Third, much of the hotel staff that we encountered was unfriendly and/or apathetic. One example was our first experience in the restaurant for breakfast. We entered the restaurant and there was one other individual having breakfast and about 6 other set, empty tables (set just meaning having cutlery). There were a few tables that were not set, including one that was by a window. We asked if we could sit there and were told by the hostess/waitress that not we could not because it was not set. In this instance, our expectation is that a 5-star luxury hotel could accommodate a simple request like this. Another example is when we were checking out, and as we were coming out the room with a big suitcase, the bellman was walking by with a kettle of tea that he was sharing with the front desk agent. It was a big, heavy bag and you need to take it down stairs since there is no lift. I (the NOLA half of our username) had it under control, but in my late teens/early 20s I was a bellman at a hotel in New Orleans, and not in a million years, in that situation, would I have not asked a guest if they needed help with their luggage (especially if I have enough free time to go enjoy tea with my coworker!). Lastly, and this is a softer comment, but the hotel art is interesting at best and offensive at worst. The art in question included scantily clad women in lingerie (at least one blindfolded) in suggestive poses (weve attached pictures to this review since this is a subjective point). Overall, we were not happy with our stay, as the negative points outline above far outweighed the positive (i.e. great location and good breakfast selection). The Minsk half of our username is a Hyatt Globalist and together weve stayed at 20+ Hyatts. We understand that these Small Boutique Hotels are not managed by Hyatt specifically, but our stay fell far short of expectations for a hotel thats even just associated with Hyatt. That aside, even as a stand-alone small boutique luxury hotel, it did not meet our expectations.

Room space was very small in this hotel. Bathroom space was tiny with toilet bowl very close to the sink. You can't sit without hitting your face with the sink, which is not acceptable. The room 203 must be renovated ASAP. Hotel staff was very nice. The location is excellent. Paintings on the wall were not good taste.
