    • Golden Wedding Anniversary

A 2 night break with the family to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary at Wivenhoe House Hotel was made as enjoyable & relaxing as we could have wished for by the special attention given by the staff during our stay. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making our celebrations an occasion to remember.

    • Excellent stay in English countryside

We had to attend a friend's joint 60th black tie bash close to Colchester and were having trouble finding suitable accommodation when suddenly Wivenhoe appeared online. We were so relieved as we managed to book the last suite available. The main house in which the suites were largely located was in tip top condition, bathrooms sparkling and well-equipped. We did not have a chance to see the more modern internally but Wi-fi overall was top notch and the Brasserie restaurant tried hard and generally was quite yummy. We did not have a chance to inspect the more modern wing with the lower priced hotel rooms but the contrasting architecture with the classical house was a stunning juxtaposition. Beautiful grounds with 200 year old cork trees and the only slight note of caution is that it is still a Hospitality School part of the University of Essex so some of the younger staff need rounding and this is evident in some of them not noticing you when asking for service (or)in inconsistencies such as another table being offered brown sauce for an English breakfast but you ordering the same dish and being offered....nothing. Valiant attempt on the part of the operator to mix real staff and the Hospitality students, hopefully it will all work out so they produce great staff longer term.

    • Overall good just a little something missing

      Reviewed 05 September 2019

I stayed in the budicca suite with my hubby and children for 2 nights. We ate at the hotel brassiere on both nights. I was overall impressed with the hotel but disappointed with the following: On entering the room and knowing the booking was for 4 guests we had to call reception to come and make up the sofa bed for the kids. We had to call down again as only towels for 2 people not 4. Pastries for breakfast were quite burnt and on my 2nd morning I asked for eggs sunny side up runny in the middle. Unfortunately I was served them totally over cooked and rock solid, second attempt was runny but burnt to a crisp underneath. I declined even the offer of a 3rd attempt. I do feel that breakfast was such a disappointment even a greasy spoon can get this right! The good points were the place was spotlessly clean and as good as the pictures. Comfortable beds. I must say all staff very polite and a big shoutout has to go to the lovely french waiter who had exquisite people skills and a real flare for making our family feel very welcome. Like I say hotel overall good and my feedback is only for it to improve.

    • Afternoon Tea

      Reviewed 04 September 2019

Really good value for money, generous afternoon tea which tasted great, lovely surroundings and attentive, friendly staff. They offer an afternoon tea for children which half the price of the adult menu. An offer to box up the cakes we didnt get through which was a nice touch and a quick walk of the garden afterwards. A nice mix of traditional house with a modern twist. I would recommend.

Hubby decided to treat me. Most beautiful setting & grounds. Perfect for a child free weekend. Amazing food. Highly recommend the afternoon tea. Our room was spotless. Balcony was lovely to sit in while watching the sun rise with a cuppa
