    • Great place for birdwatching

      Reviewed 08 July 2019

We like to go to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge during the bird migrations in the spring and fall, because there is a lot to see. At these times, only the Auto Route is open to the public, but the loop allows you to see a lot by using your car as a blind. During our trips, we have seen blue herons at the side of the road, which is the closest I have ever seen one. They are not disturbed by the sound of the car motors. As long as we're quiet and do not make any sudden moves from our car, we can watch them for a long time. There's a fee to enter the refuge ($5 per car the last time we were there), which is paid at the kiosk at the entrance - cash only, which you place in an envelope and drop in the money collection container.

It is so fun to see all the migrating birds, baby owls in the old tree stumps, turtles sunning themselves in the stream and herds of Nutria....it is a great drive it the road was a bit more cultivated.....

    • In our backyard.....

We have lived in Ridgefield for almost 9 years and have only once gone close to the entrance to the refuge. Today, our friends from Seattle prodded us to tour with them the refuge; one they have done two days in a row. Third must be the lucky charm. Even though it was overcast and cool, it wasn't rainy and so we enjoyed the "auto tour" which took nearly an hour to complete. We saw Herons, Bald Eagles, river otter, ducks, swans and hawks. I pity being a field mouse in the refuge which was large enough to accommodate a 10 KM auto route with lots and lots to see. The $3 entrance fee is nominal for the entertainment value of enjoying the natural environment that the refuge provides. We look forward to visiting it this summer when everything is lush green with flowers and leaves throughout the trees.

    • Take a slow drive and see the area as it was before humans spoiled it.

One takes a slow slow ride through the wildlife refuge and can see a lot of animals and birds in their natural habitat. Last trip I saw a good number of bald eagles, hawks, deer, some possum and even a raccoon.
