    • Worst Hotel Experience Ever

      Reviewed 03 October 2019

Let me preface this with two things. We have been here an hour so far. Secondly, I typically stay in very nice hotels and chain hotels such as Embassy suites. First of all, the signage for check in was atrocious. Basically there isnt any. Nor did my email tell me which building to check in at. So, went to wrong building. Of course no big deal. A Bellman can get our luggage. WRONG. There arent any. No valet parking. So theres that. Next, went to the Whiskey Bar. Apparently they werent expecting more than 5 people, despite the fact there is a conference here. We waited probably 10 minutes to order some chips and two drinks. Another 10 minutes goes by and the wait staff comes back and says what did you order. OMG. I expect this at a Comfort Inn, not at a top rated hotel. First and last visit.

My only positive about this hotel is landscaping and beautiful lobby, down hill after that. This hotel is desperately in need of a facelift, outside staircase need painting bad, dangerous staircase inside missing spools, bathroom floor cracked, gap and mildew in window and horrible mattress. Service in Whiskey Bar was terrible. If you feel the need to stay here make it one night and move on, Hotel 6 is nicer than this place

    • Beautiful and Historic Property with the Worst Beds I have Ever Slept on!

      Reviewed 29 September 2019

I took my best friend to the Stanley for a birthday trip. The hotel and grounds are beautiful. The room was spotless. The common areas are gorgeous. That is where the good comments end. The beds are incredibly uncomfortable. Lumpy and the sheets and duvet seem quite short. As a vegan I find down comforters and pillows offensive. My friend felt like she was drowning in the pillows! We had a little bit of work to catch up on during our stay and had no little desk or end table of any sort, let alone a chair to sit in! Just the lumpy beds! The promised channels of the movie and mini series of the Shining was no longer available as they have lost the rights to show them. We know the movie was not filmed there yet everything seems to revolve around the movie. The most affordable items in the gift shop are Shining themed. We did take the night ghost tour. Our guide, Kody, was wonderful, articulate and animated! My friend recently had joint replacement surgery and Kody got a wheelchair for her so she could enjoy the tour in comfort. We did, in fact, get some photos with orbs. So, that was cool. Unfortunately our room was next to the main staircase and on the day tour route. It was quite noisy and hard to get in and out of the room when the hall was full of tour guests. The in room pod type coffee maker only had coffee available. We are tea drinkers. It took almost an hour for staff to rustle up 4 tea bags so we had them for the morning. Also, there is no room service available! We did have Happy Hour snacks and drinks in the bar. The wine selection is good. I had a spicy Bloody Mary which was nice. Just be sure to request it vegan if you don't want bacon in it! Upon check out when I complained about the rotten nights sleep, or not being able to sleep as the case for us was...the desk clerk suddenly changed moods and slapped down my bill stating that since I booked through a 3rd party site there was no adjustment she could make to the bill. In short...inspect your room closely at check in time. Try the bed...if it is not to your liking make the complaint then. Don't wait until check out time.

    • Very poor experience - The Lodge

      Reviewed 26 September 2019

Having stayed in many old and historic hotels over the years this is certainly not worth the price they charge and guests do not deserve to be treated with such disrespect. The housekeeping was appalling. The windows, net curtains and window sill were filthy. The sheets were not changed once during our 3 night stay. The doors were not fitted properly so there was a 2 inch gap at the bottom of the room door, which meant no privacy and it was loud when people walked past chatting and walking on the creaky floorboards. The bathroom door didnt close as it was warped and needed repairs. The carpet was filthy. The air con unit installed meant there were large gaps in the window and frame, so it was like the windows were constantly windows open, which was extremely noisy. The floorboards are very noisy and squeaky so it was a very uncomfortable stay overall. The mattress was too soft and the pillows were thick and hard so we had bad backs and necks each day. On checking out the guy at the desk didnt say anything or even ask how our stay was. I would recommend avoiding this place. It may be historic, but that doesnt give them an excuse to neglect paying customers who are entitled to a basic service, especially when it is over 150/night for the rooms. It was amusing that they left an envelope to give a gratuity to the housekeeper Elizabeth.

    • Worse than a $400 a night Motel 6

I think we reviewers have a responsibility to give the business a chance to fix things before posting a bad review. Well we did. Six times. No response. We rented suite 303 with a sofa bed and while you dont expect a luxury mattress in that situation you also dont expect to cut yourself on exposed springs. During a three-day stay our room was not cleaned once despite multiple requests. We changed tour dates well within the allowable window and had to badger them for a refund. Finally they lost our dinner reservations and only agreed to honor them because I could name the person who took them, Peyton and time they were made. They seem to be pouring a lot of money into landscaping, and I mean that literally because in the midst of a water shortage most of the irrigated water seems to be ending up in the dirt parking lot. They need to focus on basic equipment and service. F.O. Stanley was a remarkable person. The people who run this place dont seem qualified to shine his shoes.
