    • Poor plumbing. Very good dinner

The good: Helpful staff, very good dinner and good location. The bad: Poor plumbing---sink drained very slowly; toilet required multiple flushes. Breakfast was not much....a container of yogurt and some granola in room. Remote for tv had dead batteries and there were no replacements downstairs. Free parking means you get a permit to put on dashboard to be able to park on street. If you are not used to parking in England, parallel parking on narrow, curvy streets, while driving from the right side is not so easy.

Stayed for one night during the week. Really friendly welcome despite early arrival. Given permit for on street parking, and a map with directions for route into City Centre. Lovely room, very oldy-worldy and slightly creaky beds, but not tires looking. Dinner was delicious, local MUD pies and wine, lemon posset and chocolate pot. Sleep was a challenge, very hot room, noisy neighbours and no air con. Easy continental breakfast in the room, nice to be able to eat and make onward journey without tackling a busy restaurant. To summarise this stay, we feel for what we paid, we got good value for money. The team there made us feel very welcome and it was nice to stay somewhere small and independent. The heat of the room was a shame, given the temperature was not unseasonably warm, but we would probably stay here again if visiting the city. 10 minute walk to cathedral and a nice heart meal after a day of sight seeing.

    • Comfortable rooms, great food, warm welcome, very poor breakfast.

Just spent 2 nights in this hotel. Really quite expensive given the type of place it is but the food in the bar, quality of the drinks and high level of service reflects the price. What doesn't is the 'continental breakfast' which is little more than poor quality convenience food left in the rooms for guests. Not like any continental breakfast I have had in Europe or the USA. Disapointing. A shame as the rest of the package is OK.

We popped in on Sunday afternoon for a drink after a walk and were met with friendly staff all happy to look after their customers. Clearly a popular pub, it was busy but not too busy, great outside space and a fantastic selection of gins!

We had a friendly and welcoming arrival for our short stay. The room very clean and very well appointed. The bed was vcomfortable, we had everything we needed in lovely surroundings. We would thoroughly recommend. It is a lovely easy walk to city centre, locals found to be very friendly, providing detailed directions on how to get to centre - although not complicated! We have the ability of permanently looking lost! The food at The King Alfred is really excellent. In particular we really enjoyed the choice of sharing boards! Overall food quality - excellent. Friendly atmosphere throughout. The pub garden is lovely & we loved the attention to detail having theTranquil Garden - part of the garden laid out for a quieter eating/drinking experience. Great! Thank you to all the staff who made our stay so relaxing and very enjoyable.
