The restaurant here, awarded an amazing three stars from Michelin, is not for "foodies." Rather it is for the true connaisseur de haute cuisine. An auberge in the French tradition, the Inn and restaurant are a destination - and what a destination. Nestled next to the Shenandoah National Park, the Inn is Parisian civilization transplanted to rural Virginia. The cuisine is truly celestial, with each dish created with myriad tastes and textures. Eat here once and you will compare every other meal you EVER have to the Inn at Little Washington.

    • Romantic 15th Anniversary

Only about two hours from our home in Richmond's West End, the drive to the Inn at Little Washington is through beautiful countryside and farms. There are a couple of relliable country roads to chose from, so you can return on a different path. From the greeting at the valet stand to the attention to detail in the kitchen, the entire experience of the anniversary package (welcome cocktail, tea, dinner, a night overnight and breakfast the next morning) was elegant, sophisticated, romantic and near perfect. Although the atmosphere is formal, the servers and staff are approachable and quite talkative if given the opportunity. Not at all what I'd call stuffy. We stayed in the Julia Child suite and found nothing wanting, save for a small cobweb on the ceiling. The suite has two balconies, a massive bed, a spacious bathroom and every amenity you could possible need; an anniversary gift awaited us upon our arrival. Unfortunately, Chef O'Connell was not present to greet us (he was traveling in France) as he did 15 years ago, but he left a very kind, handwritten note on the table in our room to welcome us upon arrival. Dinner in the kitchen (it's an extra charge to eat in the kitchen), where my husband had proposed 15 years earlier, was sublime. The multi-course menu and anniversary surprise was everything we'd hoped it would be. The kitchen staff is the most creative you will find on the East Coast. The 89-page wine list was daunting but also fun to read. The serve-from-the-left and take-from-the-right service needs a bit of polishing and the untensil sizes need to vary with the course to be truly European in style, but who cares, really, when the food is just so outstanding, the courses are works of art, and the spectacle of eating in the kitchen is just so entertaining. An exquisitely decorated baked Alaska anniversary cake was slipped into the meal before the final course, and it blew me away. Awaiting us upon return to the room, which had already received evening turn-down service, was a pair of cordial glasses, a small crystal bottle of port and two small cookies shaped like bones -- all a gift from Luray, Chef Patrick O'Connell's Dalmatian. What a lovely touch! (We regret that we were unable to meet him. We hear that Luray is quite the man about town.) Breakfast the next morning was a treat to equally delicious cuisine -- eggs Benedict for my husband and a trio of scrambled eggs with salmon, potato hash and an oatmeal souffl, as recommended by our personal steward at dinner the previous evening. Follwing breakfast, we walked the gardens and farm, admiring the animals and chef's garden. We paused at the gift shop, which is really quite lovely and not at all a touristy collection of knick-knacks. The Inn at Little Washington lives and breathes comfort and style; it's eclectic but warm and welcoming. Is it expensive? Yes, very. However, the staff pour love and hard work into every minute of your experience, and it is one that you will never forget. I wish we had stayed longer; that's our only regret. Thank you, Chef, for a lovely return visit to remember!

We were there last month for dinner to celebrate my milestone birthday and it was a wonderful experience start to finish. This was our first time there and it lived up to our expectations and some. The meal was delicious but the service was what truly sets it apart. They put us in a table that was tucked away in a corner so that we had maximum privacy and we never felt rushed for a moment. My husband doesn't like stuffy places but all of the staff here were warm, discrete and friendly. We left with wonderful memories and will surely be back for future celebrations.
