Friday night solo trip, gift from my husband. Had a massage and facial treatment by Maggie, who I highly recommend. The treatments were almost the best I've had - if going ask for Maggie. What lets the place down is the accommodation. The rooms are very average and sleeping on a futon is quite basic. I understand the Japanese theme, however the room charge was $400 - very very overpriced. My advice would be not to stay, just go for treatments.

Our stay at Shizuka Ryokan could not have been a more pleasant experience. Having been to Japan many times I was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the inn's atmosphere and the traditional hospitality shown to us by the hostess and all staff. It is truly a Japanese getaway out in the Victorian countryside. Would highly recommend to anyone who misses Japan or wants a small taste even if they've never been.

Shizuka is truly a tranquil retreat and very authentic. Catherine the owner and host was delightful, warm, friendly and a font of good local knowledge and tips on where to go, where to eat and so on. Soko and Yu were also extremely lovely, respectful and informative. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and the futon beds and bed linen comfy and luxurious. The bathroom was really lovely. Elements of the room we stayed in looked a bit tired and one of the ceiling lights was popping out. Some of the chipboard was exposed in the kitchenette area and the sliding cupboard looked a bit worn. We felt all in all it was a little overpriced. Bath towels were forgotten in our room and the water feature in the garden didn't appear to be working. We really enjoyed our stay however and it's a great and unique place.

Lovely but diner was minimal and we were starving after. Futons are great if youve used them before but our backs ached in the morning. We had to leave our shoes at the door, which I respect but diners who werent guests were not asked to take their shoes off - didnt understand this, kinda pissed me off.

We were welcomed and greeted by Catherine, our hostess, with warmth and expertise. Shown to our room, decorated in Japanese layout, lanterns, paper screen internal sliding doors, table and chairs at floor level, a private secluded Japanese garden and bathroom facilities were exquisite and a queen bed laid out for us while we enjoyed a wonderful Japanese degustation 5 course meal of local and exotic ingredients. The weather was cold but the dining and bedroom were pleasantly warm. On the next day we were treated to an hour long relaxation massage which left us feeling at peace with the world. Our hostess gave us any number of suggestions of places to visit in the local area as well as knowing the best places to eat.
