      We have just returned from a 12 night stay at this hotel on half board basis. There are a lot of positives about this resort. It is set in beautiful gardens and is peaceful and relaxing. We stayed in a superior townhouse and we were very happy with the accommodation. They are very large with everything you need and the beds are huge and comfortable. The pool area is lovely, it never gets too busy and we always got sunbeds. Breakfast was at the pool terrace, there was a wide variety of fruit, cereals, pastries and cooked breakfast. It was lovely to eat there by the pool and there was never a problem to pop back later and grab a coffee before it finished service. We swapped dinner for lunch on a number of occasions and there was lots of choice for meat eaters and vegetarians, the salads were very good as were the pizzas and burgers. The negatives - our arrival was very disappointing. We arrived late about 9.30pm and the receptionist gave us a warm greeting and advised us to go straight through for dinner as it was late. We went to the restaurant and they said there were no tables ready and we should get a drink at the bar. The barman completely ignored us and the tables were cluttered with used food plates. When I asked if we could get a drink he laughed and walked off, he was incredibly rude. It was apparent once we were seated in the restaurant there were no staff and they were all really miserable. The dinner choice is very limited and every night there was a choice of a fish or meat course, a vegetarian or risotto, and are really the same dishes slightly modified each day. The food was tasty, but we opted for a late lunch or ate out. The drinks are expensive so we went to the local supermarket. There are some lovely staff members mainly the female members who were always friendly and helpful. The service however is slow and some staff members looked miserable, I think they are really understaffed. I asked for something to be replaced in our villa and it took me to ask twice before we got it. The location is remote with nowhere to go at night unless you go in to Carvoeiro and we found the shuttle bus handy. You need a car otherwise you will spend a lot on taxis getting about. The nearby Marinho beach is stunning. We enjoyed our stay, but we wouldn't return as we were quite disappointed by the service and the remoteness of the location.

      We loved the property, and the concept of it being a villa AND hotel. It was very spacious and beautiful, and the staff (Ana Felix, to be precise) were very helpful and attentive. The only downside for us was that it was far from an event we were attending, and because of this we had to resort to taxis etc because the location of the villa is not easily accessible with public transport. Once again though, thank you for your help and kindness Ana!

    • Deplorable, overpriced, understaffed, overrated

      Well where do I begin. This resort states it is a 4 star, I strongly disagree with this. Yes the place is clean and tidy but the service is absolutely undeniable horrendous. Starting from when we arrived. We arrived at the hotel at 2135 hours and went to the bar as we were travelling all day, so as you would assume we are hungry and thirsty. We get to the bar where there is no person serving. We wait 5 minutes and a staff member appears and serves every other person who arrived later than us first. I can only assume this is because he knew there would be a guaranteed tip from those customers. Eventually last in the queue at 2210 we get served to only be told food stopped being served at 2200 hours. Luckily after we had explained we had waited since 2135 they agreed to make us pizza and took our order for drinks. We were told to go take a seat outside and the drinks would be brought to us. We sat there until 2240 before our drinks were brought to us, may I add WITH THE FOOD. So first night was not off to a good start. On our second night we arranged the shuttle service to take us to Carvoeiro(which is provided by the hotel) we arrived back at reception at 1500 hours and asked to book a table for 2000 hours that evening. The staff member immediately asked what board we were as as soon as we said bed and breakfast immediately told us there were no tables at all for the evening. Due to this we spoke with another staff member( who we found later was the manager) he stated that this was only because they are short staffed and they don't have enough staff to accommodate to serve for dinner. However he was able to get us a table for 1830 that night as we expressed our dissatisfaction with the level of service over the first 2 days. We arrived at dinner and there was not one person in the restaurant until we left at 2030. So I find it hard to believe that there was indeed no tables. The food is overpriced for the standard that they present. Drinks are also very overpriced. Some, not all were very unhelpful and very unapproachable bordering on rude. Everything you ask appears to be a chore and not like they want to help guests. Overall the hotel seems very unwelcoming with the except of the rare staff member who is helpful. I WOULD NOT recommend this hotel to any of my friends or family. Unfortunately for the amount of money we paid for the "4 star" experience I was completely disappointed. I read many reviews prior to booking and was excited to come and stay within Vale D'El Rei but I've never experienced a hotel like it before. I find it abysmal that some of the amazing reviews below are even for the same hotel. The location is ideal as you can get a taxi to Carvoeiro as it is only 10 Euro for a taxi back. Please think before you book this overpriced and understaffed and overrated hotel.

      Fantastic hotel, this was our 4th family holiday here and it did not disappoint. The hotel is modern, spacious and clean. Our room was excellent, decorated to high a standard, again exceptionally clean, air con was faultless and the bed was absolutely massive (and comfortable). The grounds and main pool were superb - the area around the pool would have benefited from a few extra umbrellas to shade the midday sun and some of the gym equipment was looking a bit tired. The staff were supremely helpful and accomodating - particularly Ana Felix who assisted with our booking and room choice and the main barman who employed our son to help making drinks. The food in the restaurant was to a very high standard from a fixed menu and in a very comfortable dining environment - one thing is that every year we have been it is always a bit of surprise if it will be the fixed menu or buffet. In summary: absolutely superb and we will be back.

      We did not stay long, as the ocean water was much colder than we had anticipated, but our brief stay was made much more pleasant by Daniel, who works at the front desk of the hotel. He booked us an excellent room with a lovely ocean view, and we very much enjoyed the view from the balcony. He was very helpful in giving us options to stay longer since the hotel was full, and though we decided not to stay because of the water temperature at the beach, we very much appreciated his hospitality. The included breakfast was fantastic with many fresh fruits and tasty pastries from which to choose.
