    • Could not Ask For A Better Location

      Reviewed 23 September 2019

Hangzhou flies under the radar. It is laid back, and boasts one of Chinas classic vistas in West Lake. The Shangri La Hotel is right in the middle of the district. The hotel itself is a little dated, and they are in the process of upgrading the property. However, the service was first rate, and the location...the best.

    • Just ok

      Reviewed 08 September 2019

First the positives. It has an excellent location, right on the West Lake, and within walking distance or a short ride to many of the main sites. In addition, I found the staff to be very friendly and attentive. Finally, the food from the restaurant was pretty good. We were there for a big group dinner with a set menu, and most of what was brought out was delicious. However if you have stayed in other Shangri-Las I think you will find this one to be a bit disappointing. The interior is definitely dated and in need of an upgrade. In addition, the breakfast was a letdown, and not up to the standards of Shangri-La or other five-star establishments. Altogether, just so-so.

    • Rude and insulting - worn, tired, dirty and lacking in basic amenities

      Reviewed 30 August 2019

Rude and insulting are two of the words I would use to describe my recent experience checking into the Shangri-La Hotel in Hangzhou. The young man that checked me in wore the golden keys of a professional concierge, a Les Clefs dO. A professional he was not. He lacked politeness, hospitality and was outright rude. This was my third time staying at this hotel. It was chosen because of the good experiences I have had there in the past and because of the reputation of the brand. Sadly, this stay was no better than a roadside motel, if not worse. Dirty carpets in the room so bad, you would not dare walk barefoot. A noisy ventilation system made it hard to hear the TV. A TV remote that would not work while sitting on the bed and required me to get up and stand in front of the TV to use it. Coffee and a coffee maker in the room, but no stir sticks (used the handle of our toothbrush for this). And a luggage room attendant that left our bags (with my work laptop) unattended, instead of locking them away. I should have known things had changed with this property. Before I arrived I sent them two emails. One through the corporate website and one directly to their hotel using the email address for the hotel. I wanted to book a breakfast event for over thirty business associates. The hotel never responded. And after my terrible check-in experience, I booked it someplace else. Steven, the hotel front desk agent / concierge seemed irritated to be helping my wife and I check in. Twice he commented in Chinese American. Even with anti-American sentiment high in China right now, his deplorable and reprehensible behavior was inexcusable. Ordering me to give him my visa, not acknowledging or apologizing when I told him he should say please. What happened to the days when a hotel employee would thank a guest for returning and wish them a nice stay? At a high end hotel we should be able to expect a higher level of hospitality, even friendliness. Ive been traveling to China for over 20 years and know the difference between being treated with disrespect and indifference. So I should probably apologize for interrupting his day. What I am sorry for is that his treatment to us, ruined our overnight trip to Hangzhou and hurt the Shangri-La brand in our minds. We wont be staying there again and maybe not any other Shangri-La hotel. In closing, I filled out an online comment card with some issues and later received a form letter email from the hotel General Manager. I responded to him, but he did not respond to me. Also, there were two other front desk agents that helped my wife later in the day who were very pleasant, helpful, and represented the quality of staff normally found at Shangri-La hotels. But regardless, this property seems to have lost the elegance it once had when hosting world leaders. Worn and tired facilities, lack of employee training, and a front desk agent / concierge with a bad attitude dont make this hotel an inviting place to return to, especially with so many other top hotels to choose from in the city. And on top of all of this the hotel would not give me a payment receipt when I checked out, not really good when you are traveling for business. They said this was because I used an online booking system, even though I have used the same system in the past and go a receipt from them. Bad, bad, bad. PS: I sent a copy of this email to the general manager of the hotel. He responded with a genuine apology and indicated that they would investigate.

    • Shangri-La Hotel? NOT RECOMMEND!

      Reviewed 14 July 2019

I couldnt believe that we had stayed in Shangri-La Hotel?! The hotel looks like 2-3 stars only! Please check the photos. I had a very unpleasant check-in! There were 4 staff at the reception, two for each guest. I was queuing between them. When one of the guests walked away, someone walked in front of me from nowhere and the staff didnt ask them to queue. (I know Chinese do that often, but since there were two staff for each guest, they should be aware and do something, instead of pretend they dont see anything?! And made me continuously wait!) Second, when it finally came to my turn, I gave them 2 passports and said we have booked 2 rooms. Ms. Kitty Cheng checked on her system and said she found one room only. I immediately showed her the 2 room confirmations on my phone. She refused to look and keep saying she found one room only. I said can you please look up and check the confirmation numbers. She never look up, no eyes contact at all!! After triple checking, she finally found it on her own and yet didnt look to us. We put our luggage in the room and immediately headed off to meetings and came back at night. I complained to my assistant of booking such an old hotel, she said she at least get me a mountain view... well, the hotel put me on the second floor and I can only see trees and ROOFTOP!!! No sight or shadow of the mountain! The only thing I felt appreciated is the concierge/guest service. All of them are nice and helpful with great smile! Thank you!
