    • Ignorant guests

Lovely resort with fantastic staff members (very hard working). The room was in need of an update but was comfortable - lighting needs to be better though. The dinner menu is very good (be sure to try the daily specials). One thing you can't help though, is people.... We paid alot of money to stay at the Sanctuary, on the promise of serenity in an adults only resort. Unfortunately we got a group of ignorant people right under us (we were room 729) who were drinking, yelling and listening to Justin Bieber until the very early hours. We called down to reception the first night and that helped, but it didn't stop the noise for the rest of the week.... For this, we won't be staying again - we'll go for a bungalow where there are no other guests and get serenity that way. Shame as not the hotels fault.

    • Great Place to Relax!

I had a 6 night stay @ the Sanctuary, and I loved the beachfront room that I had. It was dead center on the beach. There were lots of water activities/equipment available to use whenever you wanted. Paddle Boards, Kayaks, Aqua Shoes, Fins/Snorkels. The breakfast was adequate, but mostly Lots & Lots of fruit. Would have liked to have seen Eggs of some sort on the buffet. The beds are in definite need of an update as the mattress felt like a tent trailer cushion. I have to give a hats off to the front desk reception, Litia. She always provided great service and a friendly smile. The Bartender Atu, as well, was a breath of fresh air whenever we returned back to the hotel. Both of them are to be commended. Thank You for the wonderful Stay.

Go smaller - look for boutique! Beautiful Island! Average restuarant. Understaffed which could be put down to the lack of staff available in such a remote place. The staff available did a wonderful job. BUT.... The promotion for this is that it's adults only. IF ONLY!. They had a wedding party come a few days before the wedding, get absolutely smashed with BYO by evening, carry on all night trying to get their cards to work in the wrong room next door ALL NIGHT. We called reception at 1am and 2am, security and police were promised and the fightling between security and drunks stopped about 4am. All that and we had a pick up to our dream Aitutaki booked at 7am. And blood stained footprints on the veranda outside our door when we woke up. Then 2 days later when the wedding was over, it went on until 2am again. We complained to management and they just agreed that it was tough. All that said, it's a wonderful island. But go smaller until they get serious with drunken groups. The staff need to be better supported.

    • I struggle giving it a three star

I have been to Raro four times, and stayed at seven places. This was, in my opinion, a little overpriced for what it was. That is to say, there are better options. First, the service was terrible. In fact, at the entire resort of the Rarotongan and Sanctuary, don't expect much in the way of service. They get things right about half the time, and then, it takes forever to fix any problem or issue at all. Value wise, I would stay at the Rarotongan next door. Larger units for less money. Same general experience. Great snorkeling right off the shore - some of the best on the island... The breakfast at these two sister resorts are really lacking. And to get a hot breakfast, it's about $15US.

    • Rescue me.....

There are several people i'd like to thanl; Martha (front of house), Ann (bookings) and a young land at reception beinging with T (really sorry I couldnt remember her full name). They rescued an awful, no... dreadful 30th Wedding Anniversay visit to Rarotanga. Lets get the awful bit out of the way. 3 days before I was due in Rarotanga they cancelled the room due to over booking at the Rarotangan (sister hotel) and suggested nothing could be done. I was flying out and didnt have much time to resolve the issue. It created an enormous amount of stress. After a day of communication an offer was made for the Sanctuary with a beach view. Thanks Ann for resolving this.. I arrived, they couldn't process debit and credit cards. I offered to phone my bank, there is no mobile roaming (UK phones/networks) on the island and there was restrictions/block on phoning th international operator. It was agreed in the morning I would go to the telephone network provider to try and resolve communications to my bank. That was a nightmare, not only to get there but even allow us to speak to someone in the uk. Heaven help if it was a real emergency! Having spoke to the UK bank, they told me it was the way the hotel was processing the cards. So.. i trundle back to the hotel and still the couldn't process the cards.. Like a knight on a stallion, Martha arrives and processes the card.. Now.. a clear hotel fault.. it cost me a day on the island and close to $300 to resolve. No apology or compensation... happy 30th Wedding Anniversary!! There after the say was really good.. The room, views, cocktails, breakfast and dinner. Although, dinner is very limited and too western. I had arranged to go to a cultural night, i forgot due to days being mixed up crossing the time line.. T (name forgotten, sorry) rescued the situation and booked me in for a visit/meal/event on returning from Aitutaki. Now, we stayed twice.. On returning from Aitutaki, I had booked the Rarotangan.. Guess what.. no booking. Martha and Ann resolved it and I stayed again in the Sanctuary. Some more great stuff; the bar was very nice and professional.. The cleaning staff thank you. I'd love to give the place, it is very nice a four or five stars.. but I can't..
