    • Sensational 71st Visit To Our Home In Playa! Can't Wait For Our 72nd!!!

      Reviewed 03 October 2019

We recently returned from our 71 st visit to Royal Hideaway and yes, once again we had a fantastic time. Those of you who have been to Royal Hideaway once or multiple times, may have some understanding of why; however, perhaps those of you who are considering booking a vacation here might not yet quite understand how anyone could possibly spend that much time (almost 6 years in days) at a hotel and continue to be in love with all that it represents. Royal Hideaway is far more than a vacation destination for us. We honestly consider it an integral part of our lives and are fortunate to be able to say it is a lifestyle for us. I certainly do not mean to say this in a braggadocios manner, but rather I just want to let you know how integral it is to us, and how much it represents to us. Royal Hideaway is truly our second home. Over the past twenty years, since 1999, when we first started going to Royal Hideaway, many people have asked us why we dont just buy a home in Playa. We jokingly but with a slight smirk say, We bought a hotel instead. What makes Royal Hideaway so very special, is a bit of the magical essence that can be felt and experienced. It is the phenomenal service provided by each and every member of our Royal Hideaway family. While over the course of many years, many of the family members may have relocated (its the same in all families) our newer Royal Hideaway family has also maintained that very special quality with great attention to detail and fabulous service provided to all guests. A great part of our day was spent by the infinity pool, enjoying our breakfasts and lunches at The Deck. Christian Rivas, who has been a member of our RH family for many years, manages The Deck Restaurant from 6 am until almost 6 pm. He sees and knows it all. He is the ultimate professional who can make lemonade out of lemons that may happen to come his way. He treats each and every guest with the utmost courtesy and professionalism and is always on his game. He addresses each and every guest by name and remembers guests who have been to RH previously. He insures that his staff is absolutely aware of any special needs for each day as he holds a daily mid-morning staff meeting. He is a true model of genuine Royal Hideaway service. The lovely hostesses MIlca and Yamile greeted us and every guest, with a big smile and a very gracious and genuine demeanor every day. Javier Batun, Ricardo Rivera, Genaro Ek, Dani Pat, Santiago Puc, and Luis Dominguez are true super star waiters around the pool and beach. They trudge through the heat on the beach and around the pools making sure that guests are never thirsty or without a snack or perhaps lunch. While we often have lunch at The Deck, many guests prefer to enjoy their lunch right on their lounge chairs at the pool or on the beach. These gentlemen will make sure you will enjoy your drinks/ snacks / meals wherever you choose to do so. Very instrumental around the pool are the pool concierge; Carlos, the incredible dancer with a heart of gold, Jonathan the fabulous dancer / choreographer, Patsy who is so very sweet and kind, as well as the very lovely Mercy who truly gave of herself to make sure I could get my nails done. They take care of everything around the pools. They offer a bike tour around Playacar that goes to town (Playa del Carmen). They lead volley ball games, daily aqua gym (we love that) pool BINGO, trivia, Zumba etc. You will also see them in the evening as the master of ceremony for the shows that take place in Club Royal at 9:30 in the evening. While we certainly enjoy our breakfast and lunch (usually at The Deck) the grand dame of dining at Royal Hideaway is dinner. Dinner here is far more than just eating, so please dont expect to eat and run. The dinner experience is a dining experience and fine dining takes some time. I have been far more detailed regarding the menus and dining options in many of my previous reviews; (which you can certainly feel free to read) therefore, I will be a bit more succinct here. We love the ambiance of Ventanas and enjoy the formality of this venue. This is where you will find the Piano Bar. You are absolutely welcome to have a drink and enjoy the piano most evenings from about 7:30- 9: 30 regardless of where you are choosing to dine that evening. So perhaps, you are dining at Palazzo, feel free to enjoy a drink at the piano bar prior, and relax while you listen to Ernesto or Cesar tickle the keys. If you have any special requests, they would be happy to please you. This visit Ricardo, who has been at RH for years was our wonderful waiter most evenings when we dined in Ventanas. In addition, the fabulous Nicholas Gonzalez also made sure our dining experiences were exceptional in Ventanas. They are both exceptionally professional waiters, and RH is very fortunate that they are members of the staff. The dress code for Ventanas is formal. This means that gentlemen are required to wear slacks/ pants (not jeans) a collared shirt (while if preferred can be a golf shirt); however, not a tee shirt, and closed toe shoes. Women may wear, a dress ( my preference ) skirt and top, slacks, capris and a top, jumpsuits, and of course woman may wear open toe shoes/ dress sandals ; however, may not wear beach flip flops to dinner. Come on ladies. You know you bought those nice shoes and are looking for a place to wear them. You have now found it. Palazzo is the Italian restaurant and is located via the gorgeous winding staircase, as it sits at the very pinnacle of Royal Hideaway, and if you dine al fresco on the terrace you can view all of Royal Hideaway in its splendor as well as the sea and the brightly illuminated buildings in Cozumel. Try the variety of starters, the yummy pastas, the chicken, fish, lamb, duck, etc. Oh! Dont forget to save room for the flaming baked Alaska prepared tableside, or perhaps some tiramisu. Eduardo, Sebastian and Wilbur are al fabulously fantastic waiters and are there to meet your every need. Pedro the Captain is very accommodating as well. The dress code for Palazzo is formal as well. This means that gentlemen are required to wear slacks/ pants (not jeans) a collared shirt (while if preferred can be a golf shirt; however, not a tee shirt), and closed toe shoes. Women may wear, a dress ( my preference ) skirt and top, slacks, capris and a top, jumpsuits, and of course woman may wear open toe shoes/ dress sandals ; however, may not wear beach flip flops to dinner. Azia serves Asian cuisine. Here you can enjoy three dining option, which include; the teppanaki table, think hibachi with the chef cooking grilled meats, fish and veggies at your table. Of course there are several starters, including sushi as well as , soups and delicious desserts Many guests like this as there are traditionally, eight people seated around the table allowing guests to socialize and mingle. You must request the teppanaki table when making your reservation. The tatami room is another seating option. Here you are dining in a more private setting sitting on low slung chairs with backs, at a low table. You are asked to kindly remove your shoes (as is the tradition in this seating arrangement) and place them in a box outside of the room, prior to entering. You will order from the traditional menu in the tatami room. You must request the tatami room when making your reservation. Please let your concierge know if you want this. There are also traditional tables where you can dine and order from the regular menu, including hibachi if you prefer. We like to start with some sushi, an appetizer or two and an interesting yummy entre. There is a small bar here as well, where you can order any drink of your choice. Why not try some sake? We dined at the Grill several times during our almost five week visit. The view from the Grill is spectacular particularly on a beautiful star emblazed night. The food was delicious; however, as our preference is that of a more formal and less casual venue, we usually prefer the more formal restaurants. Different strokes for different folks. Alberto Barragan , in our opinion , one of the most excellent and professional waiters at Royal Hideaway, who has known us for many years and many visits to Royal Hideaway, insured our dining at the Grill was very special , and less casual, with fabulously situated and beautifully clothed dining at the usually more casual Grill. Chef Chi, who had been at Azia previously, is now the excellent chef at the Grill and of course, he consistently insures that dining is sumptuous. Since you are in Mexico, you certainly want to give Spices a try for dinner, where you can dine on yummy empanadas, tacos, fish, ceviche, beef, lamb etc. The soups and starters are all delicious as well. Save some room for those cinnamon churros, perhaps with some ice cream and maybe a bit of tequila on the side. You can dine indoors or on the terrace, where you will be directly over the beach, with a spectacular view of the sea and Cozumel .Who know, you may even see a few cruise ships on the horizon. There is also a beautiful bar in the very front of Spices serving your beverages of choices with a concentration of many authentic tequilas. I promise that you will be well taken care of here. The entertainment was very enjoyable in the evening. There is a featured show each night, usually starting at 9:30 in the theater, known as Club Royale. However, a few evenings the show starts at 9:30 at Bar Allegria, rather than in the theater as the show featured on those evenings is best featured at Allegria. This is where two singers / instrumentalists by the name of Sylvia and Lupo are featured. Dont miss them! Elvis, complete with his white stretch jumpsuit, is great and is featured at Bar Allegria as well. One evening we had the pleasure of seeing a light show in the theater, featuring Jonathan, one of the pool concierge guys, who of course is also a professional dancer and choreographer. After the 9:30 ish show there was a nightly instrumentalist duo or singers at Bar Allegria. Particularly great, is the duo of two guys known as the Acoustic Electrics or a name of close resemblance. They play the guitar and sing. They are super talented and can address a variety or genres in music, so there is something for everyone. We also loved karaoke. I do a mean rendition of Proud Mary. Look out Tina Turner!!!Casino night was loads of fun even if it is enjoyed with monopoly money. Its fun to bet big and win thousands. I still have yet to win that huge velvet sombrero. The rooms are meticulously attended to by your day housekeeper, as well as by your evening housekeeper who performs your evening turn down service. These are two different individuals who work diligently to keep your rom fresh and tidy and in our humble opinion deserve to be tipped for their services. We leave a tip on the pillow in the day as well as in the evening to let the housekeepers know how much we appreciate their kind attention. Each room is housed in a villa, and each villa has a personal concierge who will insure that all of your dinner reservations are secured and will attend to any other special requests that you may have. Speak with him/ her upon arrival and let him/ her know of your preferences in your mini refrigerator in regard to water, soft drinks and beer. Be sure to apprise him/ her of any special events you may be celebrating. Our concierge Gabriel was outstanding, very helpful, and very kind. He is certainly a tremendous asset to Royal Hideaway. As you can see we truly love Royal Hideaway and still think it is wonderful after 20 years and subsequent to 71 visits, with plans for several more visits. The ponds throughout the property have been lovingly tended to and they are now a magnificent color of vivid blue. The beach remains fabulous, with sand that never gets hot. You can walk for miles both North and South from the property. While there was some sargassum during our almost five week visit, there were numerous days during which the sea was gorgeous and clear and we enjoyed being in it. The wonderfully attentive staff is out extremely early in the morning clearing any residue that Mother Nature decides to shed. Royal Hideaway is located within the very private and gated community of Playacar, and is adjacent to town/ Playa del Carmen. It is practically one and the same; however, much less congested and far more private with very high end homes .We always feel very safe, as it is really located in an exceptionally high end and lovely area. You can walk into town (La Quinta/ 5th Avenue), within 20 minutes or perhaps take 5 minute taxi ride for about 7/8 dollars. There are tons of restaurants, bars, shops and clubs in town. There is even a small shopping center directly across the street from Royal Hideaway; (literally seconds away) therefore, you can choose to shop right there if you prefer. There is also a very reputable jeweler (Daryo) located to the left of the lobby, as well as a travel agency. Both have been there for many years. There is a small gym and a lovely spa. You can probably get a very decent workout in the gym, although it is compact. A variety of spa services are offered at the spa, known as The Retreat. There is a menu of services in each room and the spa staff often walk around offering services. Their services are delivered in an extremely professional manner. I will offer my little two cent, perhaps five cent rant about the dress code, as I strongly feel it should absolutely be respected and followed. Here it goes: Please adhere to the requested dress code. Gentlemen please bring long pants/ slacks (not jeans Jeans are really hot with the tropical heat anyway) to wear to dinner. Bring shirts with collars, rather than just tee shirts. You can even choose to wear golf shirts if you prefer. Please bring closed toe shoes. If you just adhere to these dress code requests, you will have no difficulty dining in any of the restaurants and will have wonderful dinners. Ladies, you know that you have seen some really special dresses, slacks, skirts, jumpsuits that you have always said, I love it, and want to buy it but, where would I wear that? Heres where you can wear them. Many guests ask us about what we do in regard to tipping; therefore, I will offer our response to you. We absolutely do tip any and all staff members that perform a service, including, waiters, bartenders, pool concierge, villa concierge, bellmen, (who are excellent, trustworthy and really professional) day and night housekeepers, and any other staff member who does something that we consider to be special. You can certainly decide what you wish to do and can determine what amount you wish to tip, should you wish to tip. The staff works exceptionally hard to please guests, and you will never see a staff member with his/ her hand out expecting a tip. Staff is in the service industry and receives very little actual salary. They are extremely grateful and highly appreciative for any tip that you may choose to offer. We are so very happy that Mrs. Guadalupe Sosa has been appropriately recognized for her integrity, commitment, passion, creativity, kindness, compassion, and innovation, as well as her exceptional decision making capabilities, and is now the wonderful General Manager of Royal Hideaway. We think that she is an excellent leader offering a new spirit and sense of empowerment to her Royal Hideaway team. We wish continued success to Mrs. Sosa! Our gratitude and appreciation will never be extended enough to Mrs. Sosas right hand woman, and our dear Royal Hideaway family member, Edith Castaneda. Our sincere appreciation also goes out to Mario Lozano who somehow manages to always be there for both his guests as well as for the staff, with a smile, a listening ear and sincere compassion. We also want to recognize Alex Montes for truly working diligently to address the ever changing requests of all of his guests in regard to provision of many wonderful entertainment options. Of course, what would a fine hotel be without exceeding the desires, as well as the very essence and centrality of each guests passion in dining? Alejandro Sanchez, a Michelin star recipient and, Director of Gastronomy as well as his sous chefs, Isaias and Sergio are exceptional in insuring your culinary pleasures, morning, noon and night. Our sincere appreciation is extended to Alejandro and his entire culinary team for truly taking care of our culinary journeys. We continue to believe that Royal Hideaway, is truly our wonderful home in Playa, as it is a very special place where each guest receives phenomenal service from a wonderful team of employees (who have truly become our Royal Hideaway family) and who truly desire to insure that each guest enjoys a vacation that truly exceeds his/ her expectations! It is our very special home in Playa, and we believe that it might just become yours as well. We hope to see you there!!!

The staff and service could not have been better and more thoughtful in making my vacation perfect. At no point was there a problem or imperfection someone was not already resolving to make my stay better. The food was delicious, the grounds were beautiful and the overall attention to the personal details of my stay was impressive. I was made to feel perfectly at home as were my friends who were quite nervous about traveling out of the country. I look forward to returning in the future!

This was our second time staying at the Royal Hideaway. This is the perfect place for someone looking for a tremendous vacation. They couldn't have been more accommodating for our anniversary. Upgraded room, homemade macaroons upon arrival. Several meals ended with anniversary desserts. The rooms are spacious and nice. Beds are almost better than home. Nightly turndowns, coffee machine, stocked fridge (my only complaint, not very cold). The only8 buffet is basically breakfast, with made to order omelets or eggs, French toast and pancakes. All the other meals are ordered off the menu. There are four evening restaurants. Asian, Mexican, Italian and International. Service is stupendous. Plenty of people to fetch drinks whether you are at the pool or the beach. No kids allowed which made for a quiet week. There are so many positives the negatives are inconsequential. Favorite meals are the fish tacos in the lunch grill (to die for), the lasagna in the Italian restaurant, and the teppan table in the Asian restaurant. All I can say in closing is this is a bucket list hotel/resort. They are truly the best.
