    • A little gem not far from St Neots, known as The 'Shoe Offord D'Arcy

We wanted to try somewhere new, in a village, not a chain, as we have had some disappointing experiences recently. Offord D'Arcy is about 10 minutes from St Neots town centre. Its a bit of a mixture, as villages go, with some lovely properties and your average modern stuff. Some very average. But don't let that put you off, as The Horseshoe Inn and Restaurant (The 'Shoe) is far from average. The inside is deceptively large with a typical village pub and bar area at one end and several dining areas extending into the old barn area, where the kitchens and a coffee bar are situated. A large beer garden (with kids area) and a paved courtyard, too. The decor is amusing and eclectic, with scrubbed tables, quirky mirrors, interesting books and plenty of space between the tables. As far as we could tell, all the dishes were original, cooked on the premises, with some lovely and unusual twists. A starter of roasted Norfolk asparagus, served with Jack by the hedge pesto, ham slivers and parmasan wafers was a dellicious surprise and the only fault was that there wasn't enough! We suggest you ask for a piece of bread to mop up any pesto left on the plate or, cheekily, a bigger portion!! If you want a more substantial starter, try the steak salad. Even the small portion is large. The steak was full of flavour and cooked perfectly (tender and rare), all served on a bed of grilled little gem lettuce, with dressed rocket (could have been a pesto dressing, but not sure) and spring onions, with herby croutons. We think we would have preferred the spring onions to be smaller and certainly sliced up, as they were large and turned "tough" as they wilted with the heat, but the combination of tastes was good. We did expect sun-blushed or sun dried tomatoes (from the menu we saw previously), but it was still a lovely dish, on its way to being excellent. The swordfish main was to die for and the other fish dishes, including one served with crumbled black pudding were all delicious. If you want chips (or other sides) you need to order them at the time. The desserts look expensive, but aren't for what they are and what you get. Each one beautifully crafted with a perfect balance of flavours, from the lemon and gin sponge trifle (a special that could have done with maybe a drop more gin) to the peach and pear tart with raspberry coulis. Lovely ice creams like coffee and Tia Maria are only 2 per scoop. Literally something for everyone, including a cheese board. No non-alcoholic wine, just a lager, which was a pity for the driver, but otherwise plenty of choice. The loos were spotless and Louise who served us was a delight. Thank you. All in all, a little gem (no pun intended) reknowned for delicious food and fabulous steaks. Nearly a 5 star rating. We'll be back with more friends, soon.

We stopped by for dinner as we were staying nearby at the Waterfront Hotel. We were honestly taken aback by the quality of the food! We couldnt resist and was tempted by their blondies with cardamom and orange served with pistachio ice cream....
