    • First visit to Charleston

      Reviewed 03 August 2019

The 1837 is nothing but beautiful and comfortable; a historic Charleston home, close to many of the cities restaurants and activities. The staff is professional and strives to meet needs of the clients. They are knowledgeable of the area and were a great resource to events and meal recommendations within the area. We loved sitting out on the front porch for our breakfast each morning, and chatting with other clients. We me Mohammad and Lynn on the weekend, and it is pleasurable to meet them, and hear a bit of their love for the city. We will absolutely be back to Charleston, and will most definitely stay once again at the 1837

My wife, 10 year old son and I decided to forgo the traditional hotel stay and we were happy about the decision to stay here! The experience felt very authentic - the street is quiet and easy walking distance to many great restaurants and sights. The owner, his wife and staff are very gracious and accommodating with a variety of recommendations for restaurants and tours. My family and I enjoyed the delicious breakfast each morning and the social setting at the table. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was sparkling clean. My wife and I also enjoyed tea and dessert from the porch during one afternoon, and overall enjoyed slowing down the pace of life to soak up the ambiance of the neighborhood and life in Charleston. We hope to be back soon.

Stayed for 2 nights and were in the small room in the courtyard. This place is centrally located and within walking distance of the town centre, attractions and restaurants. On arrival we parked our car in the courtyard (parking is at a premium in this town!) and the manager came out to great us. He got our key and showed us to our room and asked us to come over to reception whereupon he offered us cool drinks and beautiful homemade cake. He then spent lots of time with us highlighting the top attractions and after asking our food tastes recommended various restaurants. Room - was compact but we knew this prior to booking. The bathroom was fairly spacious and had a shower cubical. The sink was in the main room. The bed was very comfortable and nice linen and pillows. Aircon was very good. There was a fridge with complementary bottled water. Breakfast - was delicious and served in the dining area. Was 2 courses with the 2nd being something cooked. Good chance to chat to other guests and the owners. At about 4pm each day there is complimentary drinks and cake or cookies served. A lovely touch. WiFi - free and a good signal. For dinner we ate at Magnolia (reservations a must) and 82 Queens. Both excellent. In finishing I must add that the owners and their staff are fantastic and great ambassadors for both the B&B and Charleston. The welcome and service that guests receive is 2nd to none.

    • Sweet little inn, great location and terrific staff

We went to Charleston for a long weekend and found this little gem. Just blocks from the center of King St. and close to all the sites. No, it's not one of those super high-end luxury (high $$$) inns but it is quaint, clean, convenient and has a staff that goes out of their way to please. For instance, we mentioned, offhandedly, that we got up very early and had to walk several blocks to find coffee that early. PRONTO, we had a small old school electric coffee pot delivered to our room with everything for our pre-dawn coffee break. Breakfast was wonderful. Something different everyday and better than the morning before. We love this place.

For someone not familiar with the city and its narrow and often one-way streets, finding this place was like a treasure hunt, but the effort is worth it. The inn is delightful, full of character, and we were made instantly at home. The rooms vary in their amenities, but we were comfortable in our smallish room. The off-street parking is nice, and all of the attractions and food of historic Charleston are nearby. I recommend.
