SUMMARY I travelled with my husband, in our 20s, late August and stayed for 4 nights. If youre short for time my summary would be this - friendly staff, very natural and rustic country experience, no frills, good wine, a hire car is a must, this is not a hotel and nor is it a self catering facility- its something in between. Basic accommodation to be used as a base for those travelling around the Tuscany region, amongst a stunning setting. Not sure I would return (I rarely return to the same place as its a big world) but I would recommended to friends on the basis they understand exactly what to expect. DETAILS - OUR EXPERIENCE Tuscany has always been very high on my bucket list and when we drove up the hill to the farmhouse, past rows of grapevines and olive trees, I couldnt believe the picture perfect setting of arcangelo - it really is stunning. The location is rural. It was about a 15 min drive into my favourite town SAN GIMIGNANO. A must place to visit. It was about 1 hour from Florence and Siena and about 45 mins from Volterra. So overall a very good base if your happy to drive. On booking we were aware there would be three separate buildings making up the accommodation, however we didnt quite expect them to be so far apart... perhaps our own fault, having not done enough research. The walk from the building where our room was, from the main house, was a good ten minutes. This wasnt a problem for us, but I imagine this wouldnt be ideal for a young family or someone older or with mobility issues. Walking back to our room after dinner wasnt ideal as there was quite literally no lighting (thank goodness for torches on phones!) I imagine this is to reduce light pollution? Being in one of the buildings away from the house, we felt like we were 'out on our own' (even with other guests sharing the building with us). I would strongly advise guests travelling alone, or women travelling together, to book a room in the main house building for this reason. We stayed in room rebecca. My husband and I expected it to be rustic and authentic, which is was. Our room was clean but I wouldnt exactly say it was the most comfortable or homely. The bathroom was very small as was the shower - luckily we are quite slight people but I genuinely question whether someone who is a little larger would fit inside it! In summary, the room we stayed in needed an update and was missing some homely touches. Oddly, it felt a bit like posh camping. The cold brick floors could do with a rug. The towels were like giant tea cloths and could do with being replaced with new ones. I always laugh at people who comment on the quality of towels when they write their reviews, but it's these little homely touches which make you feel comfortable during your stay. There was air con which was very much welcomed. Otherwise the room was fine and clean. The outside seating areas and the pool for our block in particular were fine although needed some attention and a spruce up. The pool had a lot of green algae growing on the steps but the views of the vineyards helped you forget about that - the best thing about this place is undeniably the views. We found the grounds and pool at the main house completely different - beautiful flowers, lovely seating areas, a clean and modern infinity pool. It was like a different resort to the one we were staying in and I only wish we had stayed in the main house. Unfortunately we didnt feel we could use the main pool as on arrival we were told that the pool in our own block had to be used. The communal areas for our block were also fine but I would suggest perhaps a kettle so that guests can make themselves a tea or coffee. You can use their fridges and there is a sink, microwave and worktop space to make yourself a small snack but you cannot cook. The dinner was reasonably priced at 25 euros per person and there were four courses of traditional, simple but tasty homemade Italian cuisine. This was served in a very nice glass conservatory overlooking the countryside which was cool and kept the mosquitos away ... which reminds me ... BRING INSECT REPELLENT! I have 34 mosquito bites and counting. The staff in the restaurant were friendly enough and came around offering seconds. Dinner service was quite slow each night but was laid back and casual giving you the chance to enjoy your wine and chat. A recommendation would be a little music to create some ambience. Dinner is served at 8pm every night and usually you wont be finished until 10pm. There is no bar but if you keep your eyes peeled you can usually manage to grab a member of staff to order a bottle of wine to enjoy on the terrace most evenings. Another recommendation would be to have a member of staff walking round asking if guests would like anything. I appreciate this isnt a hotel but it would be an easy and convenient way to sell more wine! Wine is very reasonably priced averaging 8 euros a bottle. Second to the views here, the best thing is the wine. We very much loved the free wine tasting on the first night of our stay. We were given four different wines to taste along with an explanation of the process and a brief tour of the cellar on site. Totally free of charge and a great way to taste the wine which we later bought and ordered with dinner. The owners are very friendly and their passion for wine really inspiring. Breakfast really does let this place down so much so, one day all I had was a glass of water because the coffee machine was out of use and everything else had been taken and the empty plates were left without being replenished. Perhaps they were short staffed on this particular day. On days when food was replenished, there was a plate of cheese and meets, a plate of watermelon, some yoghurts, fruit juice, some bread, cereal, croissants and a plate of omelette. Some constructive feedback would be to put a little more out and replenish empty plates a little quicker to avoid guests missing out. Overall, a slightly disappointing stay. It wasn't quite the Tuscan dream I'd been longing for but perhaps that was my own mere expectations getting in the way. For the money spent, it was absolutely fine which is why I have given 3/5 stars. Would I recommend? Only to those looking for a basic base for a night or two and I would strongly advise booking a room in the main house. In summary, a lovely setting that could be made into something so much better with just a little more attention to detail...

Super beautiful place to stay. Employes are very professional, friendly and helpful. Wireless connection was poor and internet speed quite slow. Rooms are clean and with nice interior. Wines are very good and tasteful.

Fantastic place in Tuscany, amazing views of the countryside, just a few minutes from San Gimigniano, and around 40 minutes from Florence. The facilities were nice (don't miss the wine tasting! they make a great wine), a nice swimming pool, rooms/apartments well equipped. Perfect for families.

We loved our experience at poderi arcangelo. The terrace had spectacular views, the pool was refreshing and really enjoyed the vineyard and wine tasting tour. We would highly recommend. And would definitely go back.
