    • Great state park

      Reviewed 21 July 2019

Great state park to visit. We camped in our 5th wheel. Great sites. Park is very clean and well maintained. Several trails, wildlife viewing, bike trails, water in the river is clear, and great fishing.

    • Good clean fun

We stayed in our RV with our young German Shepherd. Lots of variety of trails: steep/flat; shady/sunny; smooth versus off-road. Must hike early in the day! No sight of deer nor turkey, but we saw active armadillos and jack rabbits and cottontails. Lots of family groups and kids on bicycles at the camp. The swim hole is great fun. We were able to float on our tubes after we figured out the put in and take out logistics using the RV and the Jeep. The dog had a blast.

    • Birding is great!

This park had four, count 'em, four, well maintained bird blinds. I have not camped here, but I do take a picnic lunch to tide me over. This is within driving distance for a day trip from San Antonio and I love this park!!

    • Pleasant trails but not very clear water

      Reviewed 14 June 2019

We visited the park yesterday and enjoyed hiking the numerous trails. About the time wed get hot and tired during our hike, wed run across a bench to stop and take a breather. The downfall was how much of the trails circle the treed landscape rather than winding through it. This made for a very hot day mostly in the beaming sun and the loss of seeing a lot of the nature the park had to offer. After hours of hiking, we cooled off in the river, but the water became so murky as we walked that we couldnt see where we were stepping and stumbled our way across the uneven rocky river bottom. I even cut my foot on a large branch hidden under the moss and brown gunk that covered the riverbed. We finally found a place to sit in the water where it was a bit clearer thanks to the current, but it was only about three feet deep at its deepest. That was disappointing as we really wanted to swim and float. Tubers spent more time walking and carrying their tubes than actually floating in them. I read on the parks website that the view of the stars was spectacular and rated a 3 on the Bortle scale, so, even after being there for 12 hours and exhausted, we stayed to watch the sunset and the night sky. Unfortunately we were sadly disappointed. The sun set behind the hills, so we didnt get to see that then, even an hour after sunset, only a handful of stars were visible. I was quite disappointed because I always make a point to see the sunrise and the sunset everywhere I visit. The website was misleading on that point. Despite the disappointing ending to a long day, we did enjoy the park overall. The park rangers and volunteers were very friendly and helpful as we inquired about the offerings, the shaded areas were pleasantly cool, and the park was quite clean. Even the compostable bathroom was surprisingly clean. Would I return? Maybe, but Id likely just drive an hour further to Garner where the bathrooms are dirty, but the water is clear, and the trails take you on a tour of nature. (Pic of the compostable outhouse)

    • Loved the trails!! Bathrooms clean!!!

The trails were awesome for seeing Texas wildflowers. Yellow Rose of West Texas, Verbana, Texas Thistle, Mexican Hats, etc were all out in full display along the path. There were a ton of butterflies intermingling with flowers so it was pretty surreal. The path up the hill takes you to a more arrid path which gives you a nice change of ecosystems and terrains. The park has a wide variety of ecosystems/terrains so its pretty interesting and beautiful. Bring water. The bathrooms are very well maintained!!
