    • Cool interior nice free tapas

      Reviewed 08 September 2019

We liked the look of this place from the outside with its tiled bright exterior. Inside it's beautifully decorated 'old style' with lots of tiling and photos of bull fighters with a large bulls head on the wall. We ordered 2 cana small beer and were given a free tapas of paella. It was good flavour and the beer was nice a cold. There's limited seating round the bar and then tables for people wanting to order meals. We were only after a drink so didn't try any of the food to be able to comment. But for the interior and the nice paella if I was back in the area I'd certainly try the food.

    • Great food, ambiance, service, and price point

This place was a little gem. We ate the best asparagus that we've ever had, and we both ordered cod dishes that were excellent. We loved the tilework and classic Madrid ambiance, and the people were wonderful. I'll confess we'd had trouble finding a good restaurant in Madrid. There are so many options and we'd had OK food, but nothing special until this. Sadly, we found La Chata on our last night in Madrid or we'd have been back.

    • Mediocre but authentic

      Reviewed 16 April 2019

Visited La Chata with my family. This is truly an authentic family run tapas taverna. The menu and the way things are done have not changed for some time it seems. That would have been ok if the food was great and the venue pleasant. But sadly it wasnt. It was mediocre at best (with a clear exception for the deep fried cod which was fantastic). It is still a charming old fashioned taverna (in dire need of a touch up), but with all the serious competition in the same street this place needs to up its game quickly.

    • One of the best traditional tapas in Madrid

      Reviewed 20 March 2019

This is one of the best tapas places I experienced in Madrid. It's in the Cava Baja street where many other restaurants and bars are located. You can bar-hop all night, but be sure to make a stop in La Chata. You can stand in the bar and ask for a "caita" (small glass of beer) and you'll also get a complimentary small plate of tapas, one plate for each caa you order! Best deal ever. Don't expect anything fancy, very simple and traditional, this is exactly the charm of the place! I was there in May and they had the calendar for all San Isidro festival bullfights, so cool!

A must visit when coming to Madrid. A lovely welcome and a chilled bar with good prices and appetisers. Will be back on our next Madrid visit!
