    • The best balcony suite

The suite #919 at the round corner of the 9th floor is the best balcony suite of this hotel. The views are stunning from this corner. All suites are located at the corners. This balcony suite is called Sauna Suite. It has a huge balcony. The interior is not as spacious as in the Vaakuna Suite on the 7th floor. So outside the summertime, I would prefer the Vaakuna Suite. Both suites have the same price of around 400 euros. We booked our suite from a summer sale for 219 euros. It was excellent value for money.

In overall everything was pretty good. Hotel is in the very city center, employees are very polite, room was clean. However, room was pretty old fashioned as well as the whole hotel itself. But the biggest minus was the breakfast area - it looked very untidy and did not raise the appetite at all.

This hotel has no bells or whistles however its clean, comfortable, reasonably priced in the perfect location. Rooms are small so I booked a double room and would recommend you book a bigger room if travelling with someone. A double room for one is fine but Id hate to see the size of a single. The breakfast buffet had a great variety but if youre gluten and dairy free as I am, the options are small. I cant fault the location. Id stay again her for sure.

    • THE DRUNK CENTRAL or Original Sokos Hotel VAAKUNA, Helsinki

The very first thing we noticed even before we entered this dated and at times dirty hotel, was not its poor service or the inferior breakfast, but the many Finnish drunk hobos spitting, arguing and begging around the hotel entrance. In fact, our sneakers got stuck into the spit on the stone-pavement in front of the hotel entrance Yes, this hotel is extremely centrally located right across the Central Railway Station/Bus Station, Trams and Airport Transfer Buses. Furthermore, right next to the Hotel (attached) is a 24-hour supermarket S-Mart with a recycling bottle return/payment point hobos collect bottles and cash them in to buy more alcohol, which S-Mart also sells. Hence, there is a never-ending cycle of alcohol and drunks around the hotel. Upon entering the shabby reception area, our check-in was completed in an indifferent and unwelcoming manner by female staff. These substandard service levels continued throughout our 1-night-stay. For instance, I had to call the reception twice for missing coffee sachets and sugar - there was no liquid soap either and only roll of toilet paper. After waiting for an hour, I went down to the reception and was confronted by a rude and grim middle-aged male receptionist, who eventually organised coffee and sugar being brought up. We had to do without soap to wash our hands, as it would have been too much effort to get some. Yet, later on we did come across a young male receptionist, who was very helpful and pleasant. Because we previously stayed in the Original Sokos Hotel Helsinki (on Kluuvikatu), where everything was consistently great (service, cleanliness, breakfast) we were really looking forward to our breakfast. Disappointment does not do justice to describe the War Over the Bacon & Scrambled Eggs, which run out and after over 5 minutes of waiting for replenishment, the Finnish guests elbowed their way through the queue as if they were in an ice hockey match. Or maybe they were more informed of the fact, that what ever food run out was unlikely to be replenished or it would take loooong time to do so. Sadly, there was no staff around to inform of anything - the few marked food labels were in Finnish only. However, the view from the Rooftop breakfast area was great. Maybe this hotel should market itself as For the Finns only, the Finnish Way or No Way with Bonus Finnish Drunks. Next time we are in Helsinki, we will be back in the other Sokos-hotel, the Original Sokos Hotel Helsinki in Kluuvikatu, where guests are treated with courtesy and respect and everything is great.

    • Average experience not a very comfortable stay

Very very bad experience. Doesn't have all the amenities, house keeping is horrible, bathroom design is not good. Even for tea and sugar you have to ask everyday, won't be available in the room. I stayed for 14 days, and out of that had to ask for tea-sugar for 9 days. Cups & spoons are not cleaned properly. I found lipstick marks on the cup when I was about to drink from it. Mould-dew in the bathroom. Even just after 1 hour of starting, you won't find many items in the breakfast. When you ask the staff, they have only one thing to say "Sorry, for the inconvenience, we don't have it." I couldn't get bananas for 10 out of 14 days.
