    • A disappointment

We stayed here around three or four years ago and really liked it. We had a fairly large room at the back of the hotel and it was off-season so not particularly expensive. North Berwick is a lovely seaside town, handy to Edinburgh - and therein lies the problem. August is not a great time to travel to Edinburgh as the Festival is in full swing and accommodation is very expensive. The hoteliers of North Berwick obviously realise people are seeking a cheaper alternative to Edinburgh and up their prices accordingly. We paid nearly 200 pounds a night for this B&B, which is very expensive for what we got. Our room was cramped, poorly appointed - cheap tea bags and instant coffee, for example. There was a large wardrobe but only one drawer to put clothes in. The table for the kettle and cups etc was very small. There were only two double power outlets in the room, which meant that the kettle would have to be put on the floor, which seemed dangerous. Luckily we had brought our own power board so could make an ad hoc arrangement on the small table. The bathroom was tiny and was not cleaned one morning. We were also given a teapot with a cracked handle. Both these problems were remedied, but the staff seemed quite dispirited and not at all welcoming. Our overall impression is that little effort is made here. With a bit more thought the room would not have seemed so badly arranged. We felt ripped off, essentially. Not at all good value for money.

Don't expect any sort of hotel extras this is only a b&b even though the prices are on the hotel side. If you want an undisturbed night's sleep then ask for a room at the back of the building as far away from the chiming clock tower as possible.

We had the best time. Easy check in, interested and (discrete) informative staff. Stayed in #2 the family suite with a huge sofa bed and king double, expertly made up so the kids bed was in front of the adults and at the TV (you get me) plus shower room. Not cheap but so worth the money on reflection. Great food, two mins from beach, pubs, shops. Petanque/putting/tennis two mins to the left. Change of staff on check out and just as lovely. We struck lucky with the weather but there's enough to be getting on with and loads of lovely local shops to support. DO IT (just not when I want to book)

Absolutely fantastic place to stop for food. Food was beautiful - had the toasted haggis and cheese bagel with salad and crisps . The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Beautiful setting. Would highly recommend.

Superb room (No 2) large sofa and great shower. Lovely breakfast and great host. This place gets better each year as the owners continually invest in room upgrades etc. Free parking and right in the middle of town
