    • Interesting look at an old manufacturing process

You must see the Chaouwara tanneries when in Fes/Fez. Dont bother with the smaller tanneries, no matter what the endless parade of faux guides insist. Ignore the dozens of pesky touts and go to No.10 for a great balcony view, mint leaves to mask the odors, and polite, low-pressure sales invitations. The prices seemed fair and the salesman was very polite and not pushy. This is part of a coop, we were assured. I cant confirm, but the salesman seemed to be among the more credible personalities we encountered in Fez. (Please dont reward the loud, rude men lining the street with your tourism dollars. Spend them at places like this.)

Vats of water filled with pigeon poo and leather on one side. Then the vats of colored dyes on the other really provide insight in to the leather processing that happens for your fancy handbag and other leather products. Fortunately the wind was blowing the opposite way when we visited, but between gusts the mint leaves to smell were handy.

We came into the tannery on our tour and felt overall the tannery staff were more interested in selling than telling so though it was interesting and smelly, I wish we had heard a bit more about the process. Not a great experience for animal lovers as they use donkeys, but we are here for the culture and that is cultural! They do provide mint to help off set the smell.

The visit is interesting from the point of view of seeing how leather is produced using the same techniques that were used in the 13th century. However, the stench is unbearable. They give you mint leaves when you arrive but they are of little help, the foul odor is overwhelming. The visit ends at a store where you could buy nice purses, jackets, etc. I just wanted to run away, maybe this visit is for people with poor sense of smell

It was a bit difficult to not get asked if you wanted to go see someones shop or view. But be open if thats what youre there for. Be prepared to also tip the person (ours got a bit aggressive) but he took us to a nice viewing balcony. Hang on to the mint that they give you. It helps. Nice view of the tannery. If you can go to someones shop instead and support them that way maybe.
