    • Mecure not up to Australian Mecure standard

      This hotel is tired and dated. The overall quality of the room was not up to the standard we usually get and expect from an Australian Mecure brand hotel. The room smelt musty and the double bed was actually two singles pushed together. The bed was hard and it also meant that there was a hard edge in the middle of the bed where the two beds met. The bedding did not fit the bed properly and the fitted sheet kept coming off. We did have a nice view of the cathedral as this was allegedly a Mecure Privilege room - I'm glad we didn't have a standard room, I'd hate to think what that was like. I am also glad it was just for one night as I could not have stood staying there longer. There was also a gaping hole in the ceiling of our corridor with electric cables showing - it looked like water damage had happened. However, this hole could have been temporarily covered with boarding to at least make it look better - I took a photo of it as I was just amazed that it could be left like that! A plus is the location of the hotel which is in the city centre and makes it easily accessible for shopping, restaurants and the theatre. However, there is a Travel Lodge just across the road from this hotel and that may have been a better bet.

      I had to book the Mercure at the last minute as my father had taken ill and was in Winchester hospital. I booked for two nights to be on the safe side and booked flexible. When I arrived, I realised I might only need one night, but I was told that it was non refundable, even after explaining my circumstances and that my father may pass away that night and I wouldn't want to stay on in Winchester if that happened. My father did pass away that night and I had to stay the extra night even though I really didn't want to, but after paying 111 pounds for the room, I wasn't not going to stay. The room itself was very poor. The skirtings had very obvious chipped paint, the bath was badly stained, the bottom of the bath was brown. There was mould around the bath too. There was cobwebs and dust everywhere. Mould around the windows. I even found someone's toenail cutting on the floor which was just gross. I have only ever stayed in 3 star or less hotels and this is supposed to be 4 star, so I was expecting so much more than what I got. Its definitely the worst hotel I have ever stayed in in regards to cleanliness. The staff at the front desk were OK, not rude, but I would have expected a bit more friendliness from them. I paid 199 pounds for a 2 night stay and I can honestly say I think I was robbed. I definitely won't be back.

      10/10 for location. This hotel boasts being renovated in 2005. I am sure it has not had a penny spent on it since. From its threadbare carpet in the bar to the badly replaced tiles in the bathrooms to the not especially helpful staff (we were told "this is an old hotel - you cannot expect everything to work" and this was about the toilets!!!!) the hotel is below par. We were there 5 days and everyday the staff promised the non existent air conditioning would be repaired tomorrow. It was difficult to sleep in the hot rooms, even with the windows wide open. I was very disappointed.

      Dear oh dear. Positives first: its in a great location. However the hotel is tired. Threadbare carpets, scuffed paint, cracked tiles, a shower that leaked all over the floor. Aircon out of action. Staff whose approach matches the state of the decor. No-one on reception. Unwelcoming when they finally decided to come out of their office. I'm a Accor member: "you know you went get any points" was the closest to ackowledging that! 30 minute wait for poached eggs at breakfast with only 10 people in the restaurant. "They are still in progress". Must having been waiting for them to be laid! A waitress peering suspiciously at a pale rather sorry looking tray of sausages says to her colleague "do you think these is alright?" Shrug. A whole business team leaving their fully catered meeting room to go next door to Pret a manger to get some decent coffee. Rooms at the back of the hotel face over the service road for the high street. Delivery lorries and bin collection and even a fight spiced up the night.

      Personally I would never used again, but you will need to make up your own mind from my experience today (25/09/2019) detailed below. I am attending a friend's 50 in Winchester and used the Hotel Group's website to book the hotel, intended for the 26th October, but when I received the booking email it was for the 6th October (this could have been my fault I was booking using my smartphone to book). I had not bothered with a flexible booking as I knew I wanted to stay the 26th, so again you could say it is my own fault, however within 5 minutes of making the booking I realised the date was wrong (from the confirmation email) and I rang the hotel to explained what had happened, there response was "tough", it was a non refundable booking. I felt they really could have been more flexible as it was a genuine error, which I spotted within 5 minutes of the booking and was not an attempt to cancel or a late modification, i.e. there has been no cost to the hotel. For example if I had got the dates wrong over a phone booking and realised at the end of the call when they confirmed the dates, I would have been allowed to change with the dates I had wanted. So based on what I feel to be poor customer service I will never book this hotel or any of the Group's again. However, as I said dear reader you may have a different perception, which is why I have been clear with the facts so as not to be unduly biased.
