    • Extremely helpful staff

This is certainly one of the most comfortable hostels in Santa Marta. I especially liked having an en suite bathroom with the four-person dorm room I stay in, something that's a rarity for hostels. The pools and everything else were pretty much like what the hostel shows in its promotions. What I appreciated most, however, was the helpful staff. They never seemed to be annoyed answering questions. They gave me good directions for getting to Tayrona park on my own, for example, rather than trying to sell me a guided tour as some places might have done. And they stayed on top of things when a power outage kept them from getting my laundry done as soon as I had hoped. The only negative I have, although it's not something Masaya can help, is that I didn't feel safe at night walking outside by myself. I felt comfortable in the area during the day, and there are quite a few interesting historic and cultural sites to see within easy walking distance. Santa Marta as a city has its challenges, including the Venezuelan situation, and many of them are evident in the historic center. But those problems are part of what make this region of Colombia so interesting to visit.

A lovely place in a good location. It has dorm rooms and also private rooms centred round the pool. There are actually 2 pools, one downstairs and one on the rooftop. Also on the rooftop is a bar and restaurant. There are activities each night. They offer a laundry service or you can take it yourself to the laundry just around the corner. There is also a kitchen, sunbeds and hammocks. A good choice to stay in Santa Marta. There is also a tour desk for trips to Tayrona national park or Minca.

    • Extremely disappointed.

We were really looking forward to our stay at Masaya Hostel after reading all the positive reviews on this site. We booked a superior room for two nights but on arrival we were told our room was unavailable. Instead, they had booked us into another hotel with out giving us any notice of this. We arrived late so we did not really have any other choice but to go there. We picked Masaya for its friendly atmosphere and social activities offered. The hotel we were carted off to is very clinical and the room is tiny. I am sorry to write a negative review but I am extremely disappointed with the customer service. We were not offered any compensation or given any advanced notice that our room was unavailable. We booked this room around 2 months ago.

Stayed there 2 nights, and I found it well located for the center of Santa Marta, reception staff were all very helpful and the room was very spacious. For what it is I thought is good value for money. it is very quiet and I slept better there than when at home. Perfect choice. Thanks for a pleasant stay

    • Decepcionada del Masaya

      Reviewed 01 July 2019

We stayed at Masaya hotel with our family, relatives and friends. We were about 10 people. We were very excited about the visit. One of the children got sick and vomitted the blanket, we informed immediately what happened. Two days later, I was informed by the reception that we need to pay 180,000COP for the blanket set, after a discussion they reduced it to 60,000 COP, we could just not believe our eyes. This is the first and last time we will stay at this hotel and will not recommend it friends and students that need to do fieldwork in the coffee region of Sierra Nevada. Additionally, even if they are in the Sierra Nevada they offer coffee from another region and not locally. At the end the Masaya experience was very bad and the local experience they mention was not that local. Bad, very bad service...At least, Angie and Mauricio at the reception were very helpful and supported us althought the French boss is the one who always has the last word, namely, we need it to pay...
