    • Dirty and grotty hotel - avoid and buy a tent instead!

      Reviewed 08 September 2019

Evening away bought for my wife following recent surgery. What a mistake! It was difficult to book as we had bought it through Groupon and you have a limited choice of days. Upon checking in we were given room 401, this was a disabled room (not needed for us) that was dark, dingy, very old fashioned and grim. All floor boards creaked as if you would go through them, the wall paper was peeling off, numerous tiles missing in the 1970s bathroom, carpet dirty that you wouldnt want to take your shoes in, bed lumpy and nothing like the photos on theirs or the Groupon website. After we refused the room, we were given room 308, which was a high improvement still had a dirty carpet, with iron burn in it, missing light switch dimmer, bed that we had to remake, dust and dirt under the sink unit in the bathroom, wooden architrave that desperately needing replaced with dents, and bits missing from it, plaster that looked like a child had done it blindfolded. We went to open the patio doors for ventilation and the instructions ask you to push a button at the bottom of the door, this area was dirty beyond belief. The fan had legs that I think one of the elephants at the soon had played football with. The bar area was unbearably hot, so we sat outside to eat in a unkempt grass area that needed cutting with fag ends everywhere. My wife nearly fell on the floor after she sat on one of the seats which unknown to her the leg was completely bent. The curry came stone cold and the second attempt, whilst heated up more in the microwave was bland and tasteless. The hot tip up was not working, the pool had a scummy dirty mark around the water surface, where someone had wiped in with their finger clean me. The carpets in the a la carte Restaurant were all dirty and needing replacing. Whilst we were refunded for our meal, we were refused a refund for the evening stay and trying to get a contact for someone more senior than the resident manager who is unhelpful is impossible. The resident manager believes the rooms are clean!? Thankfully we have a higher standard of cleanliness than Marwell! The place needs shutting down and a complete new refurb and deep clean. It makes faulty towers look fantastic. Dont waste your money with this grim hotel. Youd be better buying a tent!

    • What a difference a year makes

      Reviewed 08 September 2019

Last year I came to this hotel and had the most amazing time, including food and service, a year on and it is a different tale. The reception staff as always are lovely and as helpful as they can be, the rooms basic but clean. The outside of the building is now getting to be a bit shabby and could do with some TLC. The swimming pool area still has nice luke warm water so you are able to swim and not freeze. All this so far great. The downside this trip was the main restaurant. I do have issues with dietary requirements and on this occasion they were not met at all. There was nothing I could eat on the starter menu and the only thing I could eat, so long as well done was the duck. So I had duck and six chips. That is what I was served. Two of the three chips were not even cooked all the way through. Pudding was a no go because of my allergies. The food being served was also far below par. When one of the waitresses asked my husband if his food was ok he said its ok about 5 out of 10. To which the young lady replied are you being sarcastic. My husband was deadly serious. The food served up looked lovely on the plate but that was as far as it went. No flavours at all from the dish. I had previously asked if I could maybe order something from the bar menu but was told I would have to eat it in the bar area and not in the main restaurant which was not the case last year. After a dreadful time in the restaurant they said because of the problem with the food that I could have free meal from the bar menu. Off we went to the bar area, I ordered a ham sandwich. Said sandwich took about 20 to 30 mins to arrive and when it did it was dried up and hard on the top layer of the sandwich. Gave up after that as they were clearly not bothered that I was a hungry customer. When reaching the bedroom I pulled back the covers to get into bed and because the bed had not been made up correctly in the first place the bottom sheet came away with the main duvet which showed we had no bed protector sheet. In this day and age this is expected. This experience was not at all pleasant and as a result I will not be using this hotel again.

    • Hotel experience

      Reviewed 03 September 2019

The overall hotel is very nice, the staff are particularly very helpful, polite and well presented. The Pool is ok, a little on the misty side though, the sauna is lovely and the treadmills work fine but a little dated. The food menu at the lounge bar is nice with a wide variety to suit all needs. I would recommend this hotel and would stay for future business trips, the only downfall is that the wifi near the rooms in the 100's is quite poor and signal is hardly found.

    • Great place & great staff

Reading the reviews it was not good however people need to remember that it is only 3 star. The hotel does need a bit of TLC however the staff make up for it.All the staff are so friendly and welcoming and if you come you must try the tasting menu, the hotel should have a star just for this well done to the chef and because of this we had it twice. Breakfast needs a bit of work not as good as the evening meal.So please keep doing what you do well and thank you to all the staff,we will be back.

    • We visited on 25th August 2019 for a family wedding and a stay over the night before Marwell the next day.

      Reviewed 29 August 2019

Rooms were fine clean and tidy so can't fault those luckerly we had a fan as it was a very very hot day some people didn't in the party. Food was lovely for wedding breakfast next morning abit poor, things were empty and not refilled had to keep asking where's this where's that! The venue for the wedding was lovely...however with it being one of the hottest day of the year, there was hardly any water to help yourself too we had to keep asking,or going to the bar the room the ceremony was in was roasting,no fans or a/c we returned to the same room.for the sit down meal it was still so hot they opened the doors and provided 2 fans for the room it didn't make much difference. Sadly one of the family members became quickly dehydrated and passed out knocking her head on the way down( I must admit staff were quick to help) an ambulance had to be called as she hit her head and kept going on conscious. After she was taken away by ambulance as they couldn't keep her awake we then figured out to radiators were on in this function room my husband told a member of staff to then be told yes we know there broken and can't be turned off!!! Seriously!!! It's 30+ degrees and you have 2 broken radiators left on hot and you've done nothing about it. They just shrugged it off and carried on. Most of the wedding party spent most of the evening outside as it was ridiculously hot in there.this kind of put a dampener on the day for us as we had a worry of our relative who was kept in hospital for 12 hours and had to have tests done on her head. Thankfully she's ok now but didn't return to the hotel till the next morning. I would stay again but not in a hurry. Oh the swimming pool was nice I found it clean and it was nice and warm.
