    • Avoid unless happy with mediocrity

Arrived for two night business stay and found check in ok , room on first impression was fine. Sea view with large sash window which was open. It took quite a bit of effort to close as it needs to be physically lifted up and balanced with one hand whilst the other close over the latch. An accident waiting to happen! No air conditioning for a four star hotel? Seriously?! Room like furnace and floors creaking every step I took. Shower in morning only to find dirty brown stain on corner of bath towel! Breakfast.... every plate for hot food was stone cold and no fried eggs on offer, really poor. Second night I had to switch to other room as I was late booking, on entering the room was red hot and window open again. Radiator on full with thermostat but although you could turn it , it made no difference as it didnt shut down the flow . Bathroom really needing tlc, cracked joints at back of sink and broken window catch. Poor really poor. Very disappointing for what is classed as a four star hotel. Wont hurry back thats for sure!

    • Lovely setting; badly let down

I visited the hotel for one night on Sunday 29th September with my husband and our one year-old daughter. We were impressed with the setting and received an excellent welcome from Fiona at reception. Our room was comfortable and spacious with a sea view though in need of decorative upgrading. Sadly, our visit was marred by issues throughout our stay. There is clearly an issue with staffing, with the hotel seeming to be seriously short of kitchen and front-of-house staff. Many of the staff we did encounter are in need of training. We ordered coffee from room service and I made a second call to reception to request that homemade shortbread be added to the order. When the coffee arrived there was no shortbread. I asked the staff member about the missing shortbread and he shrugged his shoulders. No apology, no offer to chase it up. Like what do you want me to do about to? The shortbread never appeared. At dinner I ordered the chicken supreme with a side of mash. Out came a tiny chicken breast, accompanied by a small amount of mashed potato, which was cold. Such a disappointment, and not ideal to be going hungry at 7 months pregnant at 9pm. Breakfast the following morning was chaos. The dining room was very busy, and the staff were clearly struggling. We waited up to 20 minutes for coffee and toast, and when it arrived the toast was stone cold. We were lucky that there was SOME hot food available at the self-service buffet but had to wait for limited supplies to be topped up by the kitchen. Unfortunately those coming in later were told there was no more hot food available apart from scrambled eggs, leaving some of the other guests understandably irate. All a bit awkward. I mentioned these issues to the staff member at reception when we checked out, and he waived the fee for breakfast. This was appreciated, but a drop in the ocean for what was a 4-5 star price tag for a problematic 2-3 star experience. Despite these issues, this hotel has great potential and we would like to be able to return in the future. However, I would need to assured that the serious staffing and quality issues had been addressed before I would consider a return visit.

    • Huge disappointment avoid better hotels in the area

Just home after 2 nights at this hotel. 400+ for both of us, we were put in a basic room which was small, decorated in woodchip paper from the 60's a bathroom so small you had to come out sideways. The kettle had to be boiled on the floor as lead was so short. We asked to be moved twice but told the hotel was full and you paid for a basic room and that's what you have.!! 4 star rating with a beef burger on the dinner menu, food appalling. Staff disinterested. The lift was out of order, not a problem for us, but to watch an elderly couple struggle with carrying cases to their bedroom was not on. The directors of this chain need to take a good look at the poor quality of the hotel, customer care practices, the mediocre food offered and staff training.

So lets start by saying the hotel has a great setting, however the place is a bit tired, some staff can not be bothered and let the place down. We had a lovely weekend break there and as a bonus they allow dogs (at a small charge), but food was mixed, service slow, random and sometimes offered with apparent reluctance (breakfast staff and bar staff most obvious examples). Rooms were clean with comfy bed but need upgrading. Hotel charges premium prices but not with a service to completely match.

My husband booked a room with sea view in my favourite hotel in North Berwick and emailed them to ask for a good view as was a special occasion (and a 240 room with breakfast). We got a wonderful surprise upon our arrival: got upgraded to the John Muir suite which was a real treat and made this weekend truly memorable. Attentive, approachable and professional staff (special mention to Tracey at the reception who is a credit to this establishment).
