My first experience of the MacDonald hotel chain, fairly good excellent accommodation and facilities to cater for all ages, onsite restaurants excellent and suitable to most tastes. Aviemore within walking distance which saved driving.

Just arrived home after 2 nights staying at the highlands hotel. The location is perfect for a trip around Aviemore. Overall we had a very good experience- room was very clean and comfortable. Service throughout was excellent: staff were pleasant and helpful at all times. We had dinner included and service was quick and food good quality and tasty. The 25 each was ample for a good meal. Breakfast was delicious; we ate early on both mornings and food was fresh and the wait short. We visited the gym which was small but adequate and enjoyed a film at the cinema- prices were reasonable and the auditorium very impressive! The whole stay was excellent value for money and we would happily return in the future.

Sadly the hotel restaurant experience upon checking in is an absolute rip off.... Over priced dirty and expensive.... The food is totally overpriced and not good quality... McDonald you should be ashamed at presenting such poor quality.....

Nice rooms at hotel. Spotty service, mediocre food in group setting. Unsure of regular restaurants. Remodeled bathrooms, but no luggage stand and heated towel rack could not be turned on. Slow service to get ice.

Stayed here for a little family get away for my girlfriends birthday with myself and our little 11 month old. When searching online places to stay in Aviemore I kept coming back to Macdonalds as it was a 4 star and rooms looked modern with great facilities which is just what we needed for our little get away. Check in was not available until 2pm but we paid for early check in for 12pm. When we arrived we came to the first hotel reception and was a little taken back by the look of the building, very dated and rough on the outside. When we went into the reception they had a modern restaurant but the reception and the hallway took us right back to 1970....very dated!!! The gentleman at reception was pleasant and told us all info required. As it was lunch time we asked where we could eat but he said most of the restaurants dont serve until 7pm in the complex!!!!! And we could get lunch at an Italian just a little walk from our block. Not great that there was only one place to get lunch in such a big complex. Left reception and took the lift to our floor, the lift was small and really wasnt sure if it had much more journeys left in it as I have never seen such an old lift. As you walk through the hallways they stink of oldness. Went into our room and it looked nothing like the 4 star pics on their website. Small, dated and a very small bathroom. We asked for a crib and that was not there either but a single bed was made up for 11 month old instead... Felt slightly deflated straight away as I really wanted a nice place to stay for my partners 30th and felt this just did not meet expectations. Left to go try and get some food, as we walked around we started to come to nicer parts of the hotel which were 100% nicer than our reception and block. Went into the shopping centre and there was a Costa so we decided just to go there for lunch. This costa only has cakes on offer, which we decided to go for. The gentleman serving was rude and spoke very little English. Once we made our order he then told us the card machine was down and no cash machines! Very disappointed . We came back out and decide to go to the modern reception and speak with the girl there. She was very nice and we mentioned our disappointment in the hotel. She was very quick to find us another room that was attached to the pool which was great. Said it would take a couple of hours until the room was ready and would call, this was fine as we wanted to eat and then swim. She pointed out the Italian next door in the complex serves lunch and thats the only place for just now. We came out and went to the Italian.....on arrival again a gentleman served us and struggled to understand what he was saying. He hands us a card which is in fact the pasta club lunch menu. This has only 3 options of pasta with 6 options of sauce and that was it. We were not given a drinks menu and felt that they really didnt want to be open. Cant believe this was the only option, that doesnt get stated on the 4* website.... Went for a swim after and I can not stress enough this was the best part, loads for kids to do. We loved the pool and soft play for our little one. The girl on reception on the first day and the guy on the second day were super nice. But did visit the pool the next day and when we went to the baby change we pulled down the bed and found a used tampon that was left!!! When we told the young guy who worked there he wasnt too fussed and no apology. Disgusting. Went for tea at the aspects restaurant and not once were we told you had to book. However the gentleman that served us couldnt be nicer and squeezed us in. He also saved us 50 as we never knew there was a steak deal and if he hadnt pointed that out when we were ordering we would have paid more. Also he remembered us again when we went there for breakfast the next day which was really nice. Our new room we got put into for complaint was larger but still so dated!! Really need to spend money on doing this place up. Cleaners and the rest of the staff were very rude, my partner was pushed out of the way by a cleaner coming out the lift and again believe it or not in the restaurant by a member of staff which I still cant believe. All in all 3/10 for the hotel and 8/10 for the facilities. Definitely not a 4* but maybe it was in 1970. Very disappointed.
