The accommodation is in a converted stable block adjacent to the car park. A good sized room with en-suite with a powerful shower over the bath. The only let down was the housekeeping. The 2 bins in the rooms still had the previous guests debris in them, every surface was either dusty or unclean and the bathroom floor appeared unswept. The extractor fan was caked in fluff, hair left in the bath plug hole, the bathroom shelf was dirty and still had the previous guests used toiletries on it. Paint was peeling off the ceiling and walls but the main bedroom was fine with crisp clean linen and decent towels, coffee and tea making facilities and lovely biscuits. The bedroom window would benefit from a net curtain to maintain privacy as the room could be looked into from the car park. In its defence, it is now under new management so hopefully these comments will be noted. That aside, you could not fault the food. Good quality, well cooked and presented by friendly and welcoming staff, it had a compact menu supplemented with daily specials. It really deserved a higher rating but the housekeeping was dire.

Arrived here and was taken to our room at the back, converted old stables I think to find room had not been serviced after the previous occupant. We went away and returned later, Donna was pleasant and very apologetic about the problem earlier and also gave us a complimentary drink. There is no food available on Tuesday evening so we went to another local pub, The Sun for something to eat. Breakfast was ok and the chef was very helpful. The room was clean but a little tired with a slightly musty smell and some mould on the grout in the bathroom and some flaking paint. Also, the Wi-Fi was patchy. Unfortunately the next morning we could not get out of our room because the key would not open the mortice lock. We had to ring the pub to get someone to let us out, the lock would turn from the outside but not from the inside. When we returned on Wednesday evening we found that the room had not been serviced during the day. Spoke to Garreth later on who seemed very nice and apologised about the door problem. When we got back to the room we checked the door lock with the door open and found it still wouldn't unlock from the inside so we slept with the door unlocked and a chair propped under the door handle. Staff very nice but some TLC and professionalism would not go amiss. The Gate is not actually in the village of Hook Norton and is a bit in the middle of nowhere.

    • Amazing staff, great location

We really enjoyed our one night at this pub. The staff were lovely and made us feel like part of their family for the night. The evening meal was tasty and the breakfast tasted home cooked (just how my mum would make it). Beers and wine were good, as you'd expect with the brewery just down the road. On that note the brewery needs to invest in this place as the buildings and gardens are tired, but they have such great staff and a brilliant location that means this place could be a real jewel in the Hook Norton Crown.

Visiting the area on a horse riding holiday and was recommended the pub by the riding school. We stopped in for Sunday Lunch. My daughter and I were made to feel welcome immediately by both staff and locals which as a single lady with a nine year old was great. We Had great roast pork lunch, with really great crackling. No complaints at all.

We visited the pub for our Sunday lunch yesterday - we wasnt disappointed. Good cooking and hearty portions. Gareth went out of his way to help us (literally ). Definitely worth a visit and we will be back next time we are in the area.
