    • Great service recovery!

      Reviewed 25 June 2020

Ill start by saying that this is potentially a strict review from my perspective, but unfortunately, there are some basics in customer service that this resort needs to address. I booked an IHG Luxury & Lifestyle rate which comes with the following benefits: * Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability * Complimentary Breakfast for two daily for duration of the stay * $100 USD equivalent Food & Beverage credit * Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability * Complimentary Wi-Fi In addition to the above, I am also an IHG Spire Ambassador, the latter having the below benefits as per the IHG website: * Guaranteed one category room upgrade * Extended 4pm check-out * Complimentary weekend night * Dedicated check-in area * Welcome fruit platter for every stay (but only in China) * Complimentary mineral water * Complimentary Internet I take any upgrade promise with a pinch of salt and never expect it. My minimum expectation is the room type I booked and anything above that is a nice treat. When we arrived at the hotel, reception was very luke warm. We were given welcome drinks and towels but everything else was merely robotic. They quickly took our passports and payment cards followed by our signatures and off to our rooms we went. No Elite recognition like that received at many other Intercontinental hotels (or even Holiday Inn hotels) and no interest in explaining anything about what was included in the room rate - whether the F&B credit could be used anywhere in the hotel, if there are exceptions and so on. We were asked about our departure and before I even answered I was told check out was at 12! No offer of the late checkout. Many other hotels would normally ask if I want to take advantage of late checkout rather than point out that they need me out by 12! As it happens, we would be leaving at 11. We were shown to our rooms to find the leftover food and rubbish from previous residents sitting outside. Once in the room, an Ocean View Room, I happened to check on the IHG app and noticed that the room type was now showing as being a Club Ocean View Room. This was not mentioned to me by staff. I assumed I was getting the room I booked. Wonderful! I looked on the hotel website which states the below for the Club Ocean View Room: Room detail: Enjoy uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Thailand from your daybed on your spacious patio. Relax in roomy interiors. Relish in your exclusive Club InterContinental privileges from your Club ocean view room in paradise with a personalised butler service, afternoon tea and sundown cocktails in exclusive Club guest venues with panoramic ocean views.Enjoy our complimentary shuttle service to Chaweng, ideal for shopping and sightseeing. Contact our concierge team for daily schedules Again, not taking anything for granted, I called reception and asked if our room included Club access. I was told it did. You can therefore imagine my surprise when we went up to the Club Lounge during the evening drinks service to be stopped at the entrance and told that they didnt think our room rate included Club access and that they would check. They checked and confirmed that we had no access but could pay for it. I relayed my conversation when I enquired about Club access and was told that they must have made a mistake when they saw the room type in the system showing as Club. I was told that only people who book Club rooms get to benefit from the perks other than the room itself. How simple and easy would it all have been had the staff taken 5 minutes during check in to explain what was happening. Had they said to me that my room was upgraded (apparently Club Ocean View rooms are on the top floor and have high ceilings) but would not be eligible to use the Club Lounge, I would have thanked them very much and enjoyed my stay without all this miscommunication. The hotel has clearly created a half-upgrade because the room description does not state that club access is only available to those who book a club room to begin with or on select room rates. Following the first night, I received a feedback request by e-mail from the hotel management asking me how I found things during my stay. I responded with the bulk of the above and was very quickly contacted by both the general manager and the head of reservations who all wanted to meet me to discuss my concerns. It was fantastic to meet both Regia and Suthira who were both very friendly and genuinely cared about making things right. I wont dwell on this matter any further, other than to say that both made every effort to ensure we had a fantastic stay. If it wasnt for them, I would have left the resort extremely deflated and given this review 3 out of 5 at best. Their actions certainly made a difference, primarily because they showed they cared and they listened. The resort itself is beautiful, with lush vegetation throughout and a fantastic suspended bridge across the rainforest canopy. The views were glorious across the resort. There are numerous swimming pools dotted around with different colour tiles for each different section. We visited most of them but found the main pool by the beach/Flames restaurant to be the most enjoyable, despite being the busiest. Breakfast was served at Amber and the staff there were friendly and attentive. The buffet had a wide range of hot and cold foods and exceptional gluten free bread! Dinner at Amber was also wonderful with one particular member of staff going out of their way to deliver very bespoke service. We also enjoyed dinner at Flames on the beach. The menu was a little limiting for vegetarian and special dietary requirements but had enough options for one or two visits. Again, the staff were friendly and attentive. The rooms were indeed big and spacious with complimentary Harnn amenities in the bathroom which had both a walk in shower and a large bath tub. The large veranda offered a great space to relax, although the lounge bed and the cushions were constantly wet from the evening showers which stopped me from using them. The rooms are in good condition but some surfaces such as the external walls are starting to show their age and could do with a bit of maintenance. All in all, we had a good stay, which could have been exceptional from the beginning. I would consider returning, but would also review my options before doing so.

    • Really helpful!

      Reviewed 01 June 2020

We were due to stay here in April but obviously had to cancel due to Covid-19. Although we didnt end up staying I wanted to write a review to say how helpful they have been and that their customer service has been amazing! We booked in the UK through Secret Escapes who have been a nightmare to deal with, really unhelpful and difficult throughout the whole process. Intercontinental have been the exact opposite! Every time we have been in touch they have replied within a day or so and have been really flexible and understanding. When we are able to travel again, Intercontinental will be our first stop thanks to how helpful they have been (Ming in particular!).

    • Breathtaking

      Reviewed 24 May 2020

We came to koh samui for our honeymoon unfortunately we didn't book this hotel for our entire stay, after a horrible experience in the previous hotel we stayed at I was so looking forward to checking into the intercontinental. I have to say from arrival to departure everything was amazing the room we got assigned was beautiful clean with great views. We had club intercontinental benefits which was equally amazing the only downfall was service was a tad slow on an evenings either orders were forgotten or took a little too long but that didn't dampen our stay. The hotel is quite secluded which is perfect, the gent that served us at breakfast was fantastic and the food in general was beautiful. We will return certainly be returning and can not wait! Thank you intercontinental

    • Wedding at InterContinental Koh Samui

      Reviewed 05 April 2020

We had our wedding at The Intercontinental Koh Samui. We had never been to the hotel before so we were taking a small leap of faith. Our experience with the hotel started long before we had even arrived. We sent an email to the hotel amlost a year beforehand asking team about standard rates and facilities. The customer service representative that came back to us was outstanding. As you can imagine we had a countless questions one after the other about the venue. Each time, the response we received from the hotel was swift, professional and to great detail. They were extremely patient with us and took the time to answer all of our queries to make sure we were satisfied. It was based on this inital interaction that gave us the confidence we needed to proceed. The hotel itself was beautiful. The moment we arrived at the hotel and got off the taxi it was clear we were going to have an extraordinary time The first thing we saw was the amazing view of the ocean that stretches all the way to the horizon. The lobby is grand and the ceiling was incredibly high. The concierge team greeted us with warm smiles, took our luggage and sat us down with drinks so we could enjoy the view while they checked us in. Our room was perfectly prepared - clean, tidy, air conditioned prior to our arrival and everything as it should be. The complimentary buggy service is also fantastic and extremely convenient - perfect for a hotel constructed on top of a hill. They served high quality food at the hotel. The breakfast in particular was outstanding and offers a mix of different cuisines - each prepared very authentically. We arrived a few days before the wedding day and the idea was to get familiar with the venue and do some last minute preparations. But very soon we found ourselves relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, taking cooking classes with the head chef, going to the spa and doing everything but thinking about our wedding! But on the wedding day itself, I'm pleased to say that everything went exactly as planned. There is a lot that I want to say but keep things short, I just wanted say that I know it didn't happen out of pure luck. It was the result of the incredible effort, dedication and passion from the hotel staff that made it all work. My greatest compliment goes to the concierge, buggy drivers, chefs, cleaners, hotel management, and everyone else at the hotel because I know without them, none of this would have been possible. Thank you to their incredible hospitality for hosting us at such a beautiful resort and giving us the most memorable day of our lives. We will definitely be back again one day and needless to say, I can't wait!
