Always a fantastic place to visit, beautiful gardens always well planted and labelled, spacious, visit the Abbey outstanding , you do not have to be religious to enjoy the beauty of the architecture. Visit the 2 shops one for religious memorabilia or items made from other churches by Abbots/nuns, the other is more visitor orientated , pens, pencils, kitchen implements etc, but still worth a visit. The restaurant is a must to visit, a cream tea or a delicious cake they have a wide menu to cater for everyone. No charge for parking or entrance fee, just leave a donation.

We visit quite often as its not far and we can always meet family and picnic in the grounds. Considering it was peak season, it wasnt very busy...in fact in the walled gardens we didnt see a soul! We visited especially to see the Sir Francis Drake exhibition, but we were a little disappointed. There was the large portrait of the man, but of course Drakes Drum isnt there anymore, although there was quite a bit or reading and mementos to see. The cafe was quite overrun though.....thats where all the people were! There was a large courtyard with benches and also inside seating. We just had cake and drinks which were ok. There are larger walks which are signposted....which are good for those with dogs!

We enjoyed our trip to Buckland Abbey. The greeter at the entrance was informative and showed an interest in people entering the house. The history of the place is very interesting and the displays and interactive projects explained life in Tudor times well. The book shop was closed which was a shame and the shop didn't seem to have the usual array of products. The big downfall for me was the restaurant. The footfall didn't work. As you enter the counter is in front of you, you queue to the left, but this is where the kitchen is and the dirty pots stack, so you are constantly in someone's way. You have to wait for hot drinks at the end of the counter and this caused a blockage. The area for cutlery etc. was small with nowhere for trays, this caused problems too. My husband ordered a jacket potato with no salad or coleslaw, it was written on the order but he got the salad with dressing that he didn't want. This could have been an allergy and caused problems. I also noticed that cups are stored at a higher level and staff put their fingers into the cups when getting them down, a cross-contamination problem as they are serving food as well as drinks.

The abbey is a truly stunning place to visit and very informative but it would have been nice for such a large area to have had more areas open for the public. Whilst I understand that its great to have staff on hand to answer questions I do feel that staff sat in each room just staring at your every move gives a feeling of awkwardness and leaving you feeling not relaxed enough to actually appreciate the rooms, maybe a better idea would be to place the staff just outside on hand if there are any questions from visitors. The video room in the courtyard had a table that had plates of leftover food (quite pungent) on them which didnt make it feel to pleasant whilst watching the video of Drake.

Very interesting. To actually cross where one of the great English heros walked, to see rooms as he saw them - very interesting. The great hall is worthy of particular note. There is so much information available and in a well-presented format. The restaurant is good and the staff excellent. A good day out.
