    • A horrible experience at a horrible hotel below 1 star

      Reviewed 08 August 2019

This hotel should take some new pictures. The pictures on line are not representative of the actual rooms. The good reviews are not representative of my visit yesterday as experienced first hand. Yes, the owner speaks no English, and treated us with the utmost disrespect may be crazy . A young fantastic worker translates for her, but he is humiliated and told me so by the way she acts and misrepresents the rooms and the hotel. The Air conditioning in the room is a floor unit, see the picture. It doesnt blow a speck of air that could possibly cool the room. The room is represented as a king room, see pictures. There is a sheet over a dirty mattress ( I looked at the mattresses) on each twin bed and the top sheet is folded in half and not even the size of the bed, there is no bedspread though I could never have used the bed or the covers it looked so unclean, The mattress is sitting on a piece of wood. The shower door opens right on to the toilet seat. The owner has a beautiful piece of property on the ocean but it would have been more comfortable sleeping outside. We checked in, saw the room, the worker turned on the AC but there was no fan blowing air anywhere at all, the TV was unplugged and when we tried it to see if it worked, it had none, zero channels in English. No cable at all. We promptly checked out due to the misrepresentation. After charging us for 1 night she literally slammed the door in my husbands face and the only thing that stopped him being hit in the face, was his foot which was quick enough to block the door. She berated the worker for helping us get a cab and then locked the front door so we could not get back inside. Do not believe the good reviews, the place is run down and in my opinion unfit to be rated as high as it is. The owner should have some manners and even her daughter who came by just as we were being escorted out told me that her mother needs to sell the place. I wish I could stand outside with a sign to warn people.

    • Superb holiday

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at this lovely hotel. The owner and staff worked very hard, every day, ensuring everything was kept running smoothly. I have read reviews that have not been favourable and found no evidence of this, we always found them polite and helpful. English is limited, after all you are in Croatia not England! We never found this a problem if anything it adds to the holiday experience. Breakfast was simple and it didnt matter if we were early or late there was always enough to eat and I thoroughly enjoyed the different choices on offer. We had a room with a terrace and sea view, words cannot describe how lovely it was to sit and watch the sunset before heading out each evening, just stunning. We had lunch several times at their beach bar which provides a good choice of meals and upon arrival they only had bottled beer but by mid week draft beer had been installed and it was the best draft beer we had in Podstrana. There are a number of restaurants within easy walking distance and although we had a hire car we did use Uber when we wanted a taxi, far cheaper and very easy to use. If you havent been to Croatia before it is worth purchasing some swim shoes, 7 from Sports Direct, as the beaches are shingle and rock. When it was time to leave the owner personally sorted the paperwork, there are taxes to pay just like in other countries we have visited when you leave and she gave us a warm send off with a bouquet of lavender. If you want English fry ups and sandy beaches then Croatia is not for you but youll be missing out on a beautiful country, stunning scenery and lovely people. To the owner and staff of Hotel Sunce thank you for making our holiday so enjoyable.

    • Quiet, great location, basic services

      Reviewed 05 July 2019

Hotel Sunce is a pleasant little hotel, well situated direct on the beach. Some of the reviews on here show that the writers were expecting way too much and didn't do their due diligence. This is a small hotel with a small staff and you're not going to get the constant attention like in a huge chain hotel. The owner is strict about some things, but she needs to be to make sure everything runs smoothly. When we asked about staying an hour later than normal checkout time, she agreed, and reminded us that the cleaning lady needs time to clean, so please not to extend further. Fair enough! We had a lovely suite, with a balcony, and a large bathroom. Yes, the AC is a bit weak, but just making sure it is on all the time was enough to get and keep the room cool - make sure the windows and balcony doors are shut! I appreciate this energy-saving aspect. The beds do have thin mattresses - that is definitely one thing that could be improved - but for some people maybe the mattresses are just fine. And yes there is no elevator - this is a small hotel in Europe for heaven's sake, and that is totally normal. All the staff members except the owner can speak English to some extent, and one young man is rather fluent. They were all helpful in that Croatian subdued manner. Yes, the pool is small - it's more for the kids to splash around in, not for swimming laps - you have the sea for that. There are two gym equipments too (treadmill and bike), but seriously, go run on the beach! The beach is lovely, but bring your beach shoes. The hotel provides beach towels for 3 euros/day, again, a normal price for a mid-range hotel. The food is basic but tasty, and there are other restaurants in easy walking distance to provide some variety - try Restaurant Jure and their tables on the jetty. Parking is free and having a car was really helpful for exploring and not relying on bus service. If we ever go back to Split, we'd stay here again.

Nasty hotel owner, rude and arrogant. Small rooms with broken air conditioning. Cramped bathroom. Small shower that steps out to the toilet. No soap or shampoo. Sink unclean. Uncomfortable bed. Ordered double bed, and got twin. Hotel owner argued all the time with guests. She doesn't speak a word of English.Lots of rules that guests have to follow. Breakfast room opened late. No elevator (we were on the third floor). Tiny pool (can't swim in it). Website photos are misleading (what you get is not what is shown). Horrible experience

    • Second rate pension at best

The best thing I can say about this hotel is that the view is breathtaking if you have a oceanside room which comes with a balcony. That is the only positive thing I can say. I booked this hotel for a short family break and I must say that by the 2 day we were all very impatient to leave. Room - The room is extremely small. There was any room for luggage and the closet door were partially blocked by the desk/mini fridge making it very difficult to manage. The beds are the most uncomfortable beds I have ever experienced in my travel. Very cheap thin spring mattresses laid on top of a solid wood board. Basically I have lost 6 nights of sleep.Pillows are not better. The fridge and Air Conditioning did not work. The bathroom is again very very small although the shower is a nice size. Service - This was the worst part of our stay. We had nice and cordial interactions with the Croatian staff, but the owner (a German Lady) is very rude. The reception is unmmanned most of the time (even though their posted operating hours are 24/7) and that is very annoying if you are trying to get some help getting somewhere with a taxi for instance. Amenities - The so called 'indoor pool' is a 3x3 unheated paddle while the gym is a treadmill and elliptical machine on the way to the beach exit. The use of the sauna (very small box) is additional charge. We did not use the restaurant. The included breakfast listed a menu of scrambled, fired or hard boiled eggs (the hot food is not refilled so you'll get it only if you are an early bird), cheese slices, some cakes, toasts and juice, cereal and yogurt. The cheese and cold cuts were uninviting as they looked melted or old, same with hard boiled eggs, the coffee machine serves instant coffee mix instead of real coffee and the juice is mixed with water. Beach towels are provided at a charge of 20 Kuna a day ($3) There is no private beach. The beach is a 3-4 feet stretch of pebbles where everyone is welcome to lay their towels. Beach chairs are available, but there is no staff to help set them up. This should not be listed as hotel, certainly NOT a 3 star hotel. It completely ruined our vacation. We will not be back here.
