This place truly is a must see. The artichture of the homes is amazing. The cemetery is enlightening and truly interesting. How the Moravians bury is unique. You could feel the history on the streets. It was really special and right in the middle of a city. Beautiful photo place and full of history. You can drive thru the streets or walk. Someone told us Christmas is the best time to visit and it's beautiful. The bakery is intriguing and a nice spot for a snack.

    • Childhood Favorite But Could Do More...

It seems like so many of the structures are privately owned that it is can be a little frustrating determining the historic sites to see. They could be marked better. The docents/guides at the sites were quite knowledgeable and friendly. Really enjoyed the live interactive demonstrations. People at the shops were also helpful and cheery. I visited Old Salem back when I was in elementary school and it was nice to see the exhibits and demonstrations have expanded as well continuing the ones I remember from childhood. The Museum of Southern Decorative Arts has some significant collections - especially their pottery pieces and furniture. One star deducted. I came to the area due to hurricane. A lot of attractions in Chattanooga gave people fleeing from Hurricane Florence a discount, but Old Salem was not so accommodating. Nor did Old Salem extend discounts to military family members. Nor did the ticket agent actually tell me it was a two-day ticket. One of the docents mentioned it or would have gotten even less value for money paid.

    • We loved the Candle Tea at Old Salem

My family went to the candle tea last year and had a wonderful time. The guides are very knowledgeable about the history of the community and traditions. Dress for cold weather because you may have to wait in line outside for a while. Allow at least 2 hours for this event. We will go back again this year!

    • Museum is excellent!

There is actually a museum in Old Salem that has old Moravian furniture, pottery, and needle work. Housed also at the museum is a display of furniture made in the south along with a room full of different pottery from early US. All three combined make the museum a must. Rest of village is similar to Williamsburg, but on a smaller scale. The village is very nice to walk through - we didn't get to visit all of the "hidden town" points, but was able to visit the tavern and the pottery shop. We plan to take the family back on another trip down south.

We really enjoyed our day. They had a interactive tour game for kids called the Salem Sleuth where the kids collected stamps after answering questions at different stops. They loved it. Learning the history and looking at the buildings was very interesting. Just wear comfortable shoes and bring snacks.
