We reserved on the Small Luxury Hotels website but the "Luxury" of SLH is missing here. No separate check-in, just standing in lobby 15 minutes waiting. Room is clean & larger than some rooms in Japan, but lacking in expected things like coffee for 2, not one; no customary sweets, no morning newspaper, no cocktails/alcohol drinks + nibbles. Huge disappointment because the outdoor onsen bath was closed due to contamination (no notice on homepage either Seibu Prince or slh.com) Just wanted to sit outside with coffee but no chairs or benches anywhere. Might be OK with kids or ski season but we wont visit again. Restaurant was good. Trip Advisor maybe 3 stars (cheaper price) but for SLH 2 stars is being generous.

    • Best place for ski

If you want to go skiing in Kazuizawa, Prince East is the best place to stay. It is located very close to the JR station. Although there are shuttle buses around, they are always very crowded from the JR station. It is not so far by foot from the JR station, only 10 minutes walk! The ski area is just outside Prince East. Very convenient for ski in ski out! You can buy the lift ticket from the hotel front desk and it is cheaper. The Kazuizawa Ski Resort is suitable for beginners. Half of the ski lines are green. Very wide and safe. In the weekend there is night ski till 8PM. One more advantage to stay in Prince East is that you can enjoy the hot spring in the hotel free, especially after a long day ski. Although there is a Handy mobile provided in every room for local communication, the signal is not very good. However, there is free WIFI in the whole building and even the Ski Center. Very convenient to get the internet. Other family members can go shopping in the outlet center during your ski.

We stayed in room 103, a Forest Twin room with 3 separate single beds. Check in was functional and clinical giving you the bare minimum information. There is small lounge area to one side of the reception area offering free soft drinks, tea which was a nice touch. The bathroom was small but looked like it had been recently renovated. We assume Shishiedo toiletries were used as there were big bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash labelled as "Shishiedo". The bath tub / shower was quite high so may pose a challenge for guests with mobility concerns to climb into. The beds were on the soft and lumpy side and squeaked each time you moved. The walls were thin so you could hear the loud conversations and the screaming kids as they walked pass the room in the corridor. We stayed here to visit the nearby Stone Church and to check out the shopping outlet that were full of branded items which were a huge draw for visitors from Hong Kong and China. The hotel is within walking distance to the station with the closest shops being the Lego store. The shuttle bus didnt really run that regularly and we were lucky to see it as we got off the train and used it to get to the hotel. We were able to walk to the station from the hotel within 5 to 10 minutes with our luggage when we checked out. For skiers, the slopes are just behind the hotel and provide quick and easy access. The room was quite warm and the air conditioner didnt bring down the temperature at all. The room came with a Handy, which is an android phone you can use for web surfing and local calls on the go during your stay. We didn't use it during this stay but have used similar phones from other hotels in rural Japan. It's very handy indeed. Internet in the hotel worked well and we were able to access apple store updates and surf the web without any issues. We had breakfast in the grill restaurant. The breakfast choices were Japanese or American. We chose Japanese and it was brought to our table within 10 minutes. It consisted of a large bowl of miso with chicken balls and mushrooms. There were pickles and two types of salmon. It was delicious but not quite filling. Overall we enjoyed our overnight stay here as its convenient and close to the mall and station.

Very close to station and outlet, with free shuttle and even walk within just 5 minutes. Staff are not very friendly but can communicate with English. Hotel itself is not very nice but okay with hot spring to relax for free. Choices of breakfast is limited and not very yummy.

Hotel is nice, but rooms are nothing to brag about... local knowledge of staff is VERY limited ! I speak fluent Japanese and English. I was surprised to the so little knowledge the staff had on the town... In an expensive hotel like that, I think they should do their homework about town. I know it is not a tourist information office, but in a hotel that rank itself as a 5 star hotel, there should be a concierge, with good information of town. They did not even have leaflets. Well, they had, but only 3, so they were out of stock in 5 minutes...
