Skyland Resort, located along the Skyline Drive in Virginia, is a basic amenities stay but no frills. Definitely not a 5 star place, but was never intended to be. At night, you can look into the Shenandoah valley below to the west and see the twinkling of lights from homes/businesses there, follow low lying clouds as they travel in one direction or another. It's not a red carpet stay, but was not built as such. Enjoy what nature has, forget about not having internet/tv in your room (you could stay home at look at that stuff). Enjoy the surroundings. We've never had a problem with anything being out of line as far as cleanliness there.

We stayed in a recently renovated room. It is expensive for what you get, but if you want to stay in the park it is clean and comfortable.it is one of two resorts in the park.there was bluegrass music in the lodge one night and breakfast in the lodge as well.

    • It would have been a 5 star were it not for the filth.

Review is for a one bedroom cabin. This was our second stay at Skyland for fall foliage. The cabin itself is charming, although short on space to put stuff, especially in the bathroom. Last year I called ahead after reading reviews about dirty rooms. They did a good job of cleaning before we arrived and it was a good experience. This year I didn't call, and we found candy wrappers behind the bed, but easy to see. They had dust on them, so had been there for some time. Accumulated dirt next to beds, food wrappers and debris left on table of porch, tons of debris under LR sofa cushions. Much of it we didn't see until we were about to leave after our second night and realized how bad it was. Worst thing was, the bath sink had multi leaks and flooded the bath floor if the water was run. A waste basket couldn't catch it because it came from so many spots. They had to know about it from "cleaning" the room. Another thing is, there is no place to set a change of clothes in the bath, or anything else. Paid top dollar for peak season, although they did give a discount at checkout for the troubles. I will never return unless I know they have made huge changes in maintenance. The good: Shenandoah is a fabulous National Park, and it's great to stay for sunrise/sunset. The restaurant is pricey, but decent food. Weeknight entertainment was a little to folksy for me, but I understand that they are catering to quite a diverse age group. Office and restaurant staff if very friendly and helpful.

A great place to experience the beauty of nature, history and the Appalachian culture. The hotel, food, bar and local entertainment make Skyland a great getaway. Area hiking is great, close to White Oak Canyon. Little Stony Man is just as great as Stony Man and less crowed.

I was there from Wednesday November 27-29, along with my sister and her family, including the dog. I had a room all to myself, and it was well-heated. This is necessary, due to the cold mountain air. Best of all, the meals, especially the Thanksgiving buffet, were top notch. The hiking trails were easy to walk on, and I even spotted some white-tailed deer. Too bad this place closes for the winter tomorrow. There's a lot they could do for Christmas, but I guess they care enough to keep people safe from winter accidents and avalanches.
