    • Perhaps once this hotel was a respectable place to stay but now it is stuck in the 1960s without any charm

Perhaps once this hotel was a respectable place to stay but now it is stuck in the 1960s without any charm. During the opera season the prices are so high that we had expected a polished and well run hotel. It failed to live up to our expectation in every respect. A three course set dinner menu costs 79 per person yet the food was no better than British pub food. The shower in our bathroom provided either cold or very hot water and nothing in between and the shower head was clogged so that it was impossible even to have a proper cold shower. In the bathroom of another member of our party there was a naked light bulb above the shower. We could go on endlessly listing this hotels failings but perhaps most important is the fact that this hotel has no smoke detectors, no fire doors, no fire alarm system and no marked fire exits. We would struggle to give it more than one star.

This centuries-old family run hotel is steeped in tradition. A place to bask in the elegance and charm of the lovely decor. Attention to detail, fine dining and outstanding service make this a little gem of a hotel you will want to return to. About a 20 minute walk to the Bayreuth Wagner Festival.

The hotel was clean and well kept. Breakfast was very good and the staff were very helpful and kind. My German is not very good but they all spoke to me in fluent German. I would definitely stop here again if I was in Bayreuth. It is close to most tourist sites and the centre of town.

Bayreuth is a beautiful little city and the location of the hotel is great. It feels like you have stepped into Germany 1950 which I love but the room is just not enough for the price for me. A twin bed, kind of outdated. I think it just depends what you are looking for. Shower was nice.

    • This hotel is THE reason to go to Bayreuth

This is a destination hotel. Even if there were no Bayreuth Festival, I would go to Bayreuth simply to stay there. The excellent staff is so welcoming: after having stayed there quite frequently, we had not been there for a period of 18 years. Upon our recent arrival, they made us feel so welcome, it was as though we had never left. The owner, Eva, couldn't be a finer hostess, and she is an excellent chef as well: the restaurant is not to be missed. The sit-down breakfast is also excellent -- no foraging buffet, as is unfortunately so common today -- served the way breakfast should be served. The hotel is centrally located, near everything one would want to do in Bayreuth, and is only a 22-minute walk to the Festspielhaus, although taxis are readily available. Once, when we stayed there a couple decades ago, we had brake problems with our car, and the staff drove us all over Bayreuth to find a garage that could repair the problem! We have never forgotten this. Eva and her sister run this establishment -- which has been in their family for almost three centuries -- the way hotels SHOULD be run, but usually aren't these days. This is a wonderful institution that has been lovingly cared for and handed down through many generations, a rare find to be cherished.
