    • Good hotel in charming Cavtat

      Reviewed 03 October 2019

We have recently returned from a weeks stay at Hotel Croatia and had a lovely holiday. We arrived early having come to the hotel after a weeks cruise and as the hotel had been full the previous evening, our room was not ready. We were quickly checked in and the concierge took our luggage, leaving us free to explore the hotel and lovely Cavtat. There are some wonderful walks there and its just so pretty. We had booked a superior sea view room and were on the fourth floor. It was spacious, comfortable and had fabulous views. Shady in the morning then lovely and sunny. We saw some beautiful sunsets. Bathroom had a rain water shower over the bath, good water pressure, nice toiletries and a decent hairdryer (not attached to the wall). There was a kettle with tea/coffee facilities, (always restocked), mini bar, safe and dressing gowns and slippers. The room was immaculate and we thought that the housekeeping staff, who always greeted us with a smile and a good morning did a wonderful job keeping their respective areas spotless. The hotel is built on several levels and there are a lot of steps and stairs. There are two pools, indoor and outdoor. The beach is actually a concrete swimming platform adjacent to the Spinnaker Restaurant, with ladders into the sea. Due to it being later in the season, we never had a problem getting loungers when we wanted. There is also sea swimming from the rocks at the back of the hotel, with deck chairs placed on small concrete platforms. We enjoyed sitting here plus nice access to the bar Sirocco. There is a small nudist area here for those who like an all over tan! Towels were readily available though I wish people who have finished with their towels would have the courtesy to put them in the bins provided, instead of leaving them in heaps for the staff to pick up. We were booked bed and breakfast, which was fine as Cavtat has some wonderful restaurants, cafes and bars. I never do a hot breakfast on holiday so I did enjoy the fresh fruit, cheeses, cold meats, pastries etc, whereas my husband thought the hot food was a bit hit and miss. We generally ate out on the terrace, it was usually always busy in the mornings and it was at breakfast that we encountered the only grumpy staff member at the hotel. He may have been having a bad day, but we thought him rude. Not a problem, we ensured we did not sit in his area again and I must say, the rest of the staff that helped us in the mornings at breakfast were very pleasant. We had lunch once at the hotel which was very nice and I did like the cocktails, my favorite being Hendricks Rose. The iced coffees were good too! The hotel has golf buggies which run up and down to the bottom of the drive for those that dont want to brave the steps, if you need a lift back up just call the number on the back of your room key card. We went into Dubrovnik via water taxi, buying tickets from the lady at the top of the stairs. We had lunch at the Panorama Restaurant in Dubrovnik, at the top of the mountain accessed by cable car. Was great, booked online before we left the UK. We also did a day trip to Montenegro, which we really enjoyed though be prepared for a delay at the border as Montenegro is not in the EU and coming back into Croatia we had a 1 1/2 hours wait before getting through ( lots of coaches and cars). All in all we really enjoyed our time at Hotel Croatia and gorgeous Cavtat, and would like to say a big Thank You to everyone at the hotel for being so friendly and helpful.

    • Good value even though we got locked out

      Reviewed 03 October 2019

I paid the hotel bill for drinks and local taxes on our last night and after breakfast next morning we had been locked out! Luckily at 8.30am the cleaner was on hand to help. Despite this I think the hotel was very good value and the buffet was excellent when you consider they cater for nearly 1000! So choose when you visit the restaurant as there can be be queues. All staff were helpful and service very good. A funicular would have been a good design /architecture plan. Having to climb down and up to go to the Spinnaker restaurant/bar did not appeal. I did not like the narrow marble spiral stairs between reception and restaurants. Good hotel for exploring the area.

    • Fabulous hotel and resort

It was my first visit to Cavtat although my family have been a few times before. The hotel is stunning with so many fantastic features - outdoor pool, heated indoor pool (both are deeper than we are used to), gym, bars, restaurants, private beach. Staff very friendly and could not be more helpful. There is a small shop for essentials. If you dont fancy walking up and down the hill to town there is a useful golf buggy service. The town is a ten minute walk away and full of restaurants and bars. There are various lovely walks around the different bays. Plenty of water sports available if thats your thing. Boat trips available to the islands and Dubrovnik. Bus station nearby with buses regularly going to Dubrovnik. Short ride from the airport. Would definitely come back for a nice quiet relaxing break. The weather (first week of October) was fairly changeable - sunny and hot with thunderstorms. Beautiful place.

    • Excellent hotel

Coming to the end of a 2 week stay. The hotel is excellent and all the staff we have dealt with have been friendly and helpful. We booked a superior room with sea view, second floor, well worth a little extra as you get the sun most of the day and some fantastic sunsets. The room is cleaned to a high standard every day. We could have used the a la carte restaurants but didn't feel the need as the food in the main buffet restaurant was good and always a good selection. The staff that have helped is in the restaurant have been excellent, thank you Josip and Emina. Cavtat is a great place to visit if you are looking for a chilled out holiday.

    • Enjoyable holiday, good hotel

      Reviewed 01 October 2019

Having stayed in Dubrovnik several years ago we were taken to this hotel for lunch due to a flight delay and thought we would like to return for a holiday at some point. It is not perfect and did not feel like 5*, but a good place to stay nevertheless, probably the best choice in Cavtat. Everything is clean and efficient, and there are amazing views from some areas. There are several places to sit in the sun and relax for a while, the problem is that some of these are in shade from mid afternoon. We liked the dappled shade around the pool, but this area is quite small and as other people have said there is an issue of towels left on unoccupied sun loungers which we would have thought could be addressed to some degree. There is another terrace with loungers outside the indoor pool which is always full, we were never able to find anywhere to sit here once in a 9 night stay, despite there being several loungers where guests seemed to have gone but not removed the hotel towels. It might help if the pool attendants could monitor this, also to be on hand to assist guests with parasols. Perhaps it would help to have a polite notice requesting that guests return towels when they have finished rather than just abandoning them on loungers. We were surprised to find that loungers were not cushioned so were not all that comfortable. The platforms by the sea only have deck chairs, not sure why they could not have loungers here to give more options. The indoor pool looked nice but we did not use it. We only wanted to use the pool/loungers now and again for a couple of hours because we went out a lot so it wasnt a major issue for us, but it would seem to be something the hotel could manage better for the general benefit to guests. The hotel is on a hillside with an unusual layout, and the standard room we had was very dark as it was at the bottom of a steep slope. The outlook was not attractive and in permanent shade. We asked if we could move and got a higher room with a different aspect which was much better, although still shady and the balcony was very small so we didnt really use it. I think the sea view rooms must be the only ones with sunny balconies. The rooms had everything we needed including a kettle, but more drawer space would be useful as there wasnt quite enough space for clothes etc. The buffet meals were quite good, although not the best we have had. The cooked breakfast options were good, also the cereals, appreciated the selection of dried fruit and nuts. The bakery products were not the best though, the bread rolls did not seem very fresh. The rolls served at the evening meal were always fresher. The salads and soups were very good, also desserts. The meat and fish were ok, there was always a good choice. We found that the vegetables were a bit overcooked for our taste. We only had lunch once at the pool bar, we found more choice and better quality in the town. There is a musician every evening in the bar or on the terrace. We usually like to have some music/dancing, but it was generally not very good, except for one guitarist, so we often went into town where there were other bars with live music. We actually had a brilliant holiday, Cavtat is a delight to wander around both day and evening. We visited Dubrovnik on the bus a few times, got the bus to Mlini and walked around the coast to Kupari, did the 3 island boat trip and also got the ferry to Lokrum (where we found everything very expensive). We had hoped to hire a car and visit Montenegro, but the car hire agency in the hotel was very expensive and the border crossing sounded complicated. There were day trips, but with a very early start so in the end we decided not to bother. Would be happy to return to this hotel.
