I stopped by for lunch while strolling through Oslo near the waterfront. I just wanted something simple, so the waiter suggested the fish soup, which comes with freshly baked bread. I also got a pint of the British style ale they brew here. It was simply excellent - simple, but delicious. best meal I had the whole week in Oslo!

We walked into this place by accident, just because we were hungry and it was the next eatery we came across. My companion was also intrigued by the menu (although it was definitely going to be one of our more expensive meals). We were disappointed at first that the lunch menu didn't include some of the interesting items we had seen on the dinner menu. However, the server offered to ask the chef if the kitchen could provide what we wanted and we were delighted that they were able to do so. It turned out to be one of the best meals we have had anywhere. My companion had whale steak -- a new experience -- and loved it. We were surprised to find ourselves seated at "Edvard Munch's table" and only after asking the waiter about it did we realize we had stumbled into Oslo's oldest restaurant, where many prominent cultural and political figures have been regular patrons over the years. We had a long and delightful conversation with the waiter about the history of the restaurant and about Norway in general. We even ordered dessert, just to make the experience last longer. This was definitely a "splurge" meal for us, but it was worth every krone!

This is such a popular local eating place it is very difficult to walk up and find a table available. On the day we spontaneously tried to get a table there were several small groups of local people celebrating various things over a delicious authentic Norwegian lunch. It was our good fortune that the charming waiter just told us to rest at the patio seating and shortly there would be a table for us. Well worth the wait. We were seated at a nice table in the window and enjoyed taking in all the decor that has been collected over the years. We had an absolutely delicious lunch, perfectly served, each with a glass of good wine, for only 580NOK (approximately $89 Cdn for 2). To put this price into perspective for travelling in Scandinavia, our basic breakfasts for 2 were approximately $60, lunches in inferior restaurants have been nearly $70, Admission fee to the museum was $30. We ordered enough food to feel satiated and content. I get frustrated when I see people give terrible ratings to fine places based on their own personal issues: not enough money to be going to such a high end restaurant where they can't afford to order a full meal or who are difficult to please (or so discerning that the number of their low ratings exactly match their high ratings). A trash review from someone who has visited 1 city and has placed only 3 reviews only makes me think perhaps they would be happier with the portion sizes and prices at MacDonald's. These outlier reviews don't really influence an experienced traveller's decisions, they simply downgrade the ratings of a good restaurant or hotel. But, perhaps the locals are pleased if comments like those discourage some tourists and travellers from taking up tables in one of their favourite restaurants, leaving more room for them. I wasn't going to bother writing a review as our opinion melded so well with the other highly rated reviews but I couldn't stand the first ones on the list to be so unrepresentative of our experience.

We happened upon this place and were thrilled to see their chalkboard saying they were the oldest restaurant in Oslo. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside. It took awhile for a less than enthused person to take our order: omelette and shrimp sandwich. While waiting, I read the reviews and noticed how negative they were. And they were right. Sandwich was so bland-like someone dumped a plate of boiled shrimp on some bread. Our most expensive meal in Scandinavia and our least favorite. Avoid.
