    • 3 nights midweek break

Very comfortable hotel in historic buildings set in beautiful relaxing parkland. Our room situated in the main house was very spacious and well equipped, although the Nespresso machine for coffee and tea really doesn't work. We found the service excellent and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. However we were surprised and disappointed with the poor quality of some of the food during our stay, in particular a fish dish at dinner and the room service meals

We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed it so much we didnt want to leave! The building is impressive and the rooms are beautifully furnished We had a Royal room which was spacious with a lovely view of the grounds and the lake The staff are all friendly and helpful whilst being professional at all times I would particularly like to mention Elena who served us on our last evening as she exceeded expectations The food at breakfast was very good, especially the smoked salmon and we enjoyed three delicious evening meals Canaps were very yummy too!!

From the moment we arrived and warmly welcomed by David on the gate to John showing us to our rooms while giving us interesting history of the property we knew this was going to be a lovely break. EVERYONE ensured that our stay was as special as it could be. This is a National Trust property so comes with the history you would expect. The spa was peaceful, relaxing and quiet while we were there. We went out for dinner, but breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious. As well as taking in the spectacular historical interior, we also enjoyed a lovely walk around the large grounds. We are already planning our next visit back. It is clear that the staff take pride in working there, and all were helpful with genuine warmth.

    • A splendid place.

We stayed here as our last stop on our trip before London (just an hour and a half or so away by car, Heathrow is even closer). We had a splendid time. The hotel is a beautiful, slightly eccentric, and hence even more charming, country house, with a very interesting history all of its own, which the staff are happy to tell you about if you are willing to listen. It has been beautifully restored, and the ground floor, public rooms of the house are quite a delight, only topped by the eccentric, fabulous, seventeenth century staircase. The hotel rooms are also lovely, and well-appointed. Our room had a beautiful view over the extensive park grounds, which are also delightful. In addition to all this there is the spa. We were only able to sample the swimming pool, but that was quite spectacular. Beautifully appointed and most elegant. The restaurant was also excellent. It is one of the most pleasant hotel stays we have had. There were a couple of small inconveniences: the spa is at some distance from the main house, and you have to take a (short) walk along the drive and through the car park to get there from the hotel. If the weather was not as nice as it was when we were there that might be a deterrent (although the pool is really quite special, worth the walk!) Also, it would be good if there could be "real" double beds as opposed to two twins zipped together. Yet these are very small deficiencies in what is otherwise a lovely, lovely place, with charming, efficient staff, and an excellent restaurant (dinner and breakfast). All in all a splendid place, at a remarkably low price for what it is, and I strongly recommend a stay as a relaxing way to escape the pressures of the nearby metropolis.

What a beautiful hotel! Makes one feel like royalty. Magnificent grounds ideal for after dinner stroll. Stayed here as part of a tour of castles and manor houses of northern England. Superb service. great food. Lovely spa and pool for relaxing after a day of touring. Hotel is somewhat formal. Women should wear dress or nice slacks; men should have collared shirt and possibly a jacket at dinner. First hotel Ive ever stayed at where the bartenders wear tails. Would love to go there and stay for a few days.
