Ok so heres my balanced review - Hotel was built in the late 60s to early 70s and some of it still resembles that era. If your paying what you call a lot of money to come you might be disappointed but if you get a good deal then you will over look some of the out of date older decor and have a good time. This is a small hotel so with that comes less dining options. Buffet had small selection but always of good quality - breakfast was really good with porridge, fresh bagels, poached eggs cooked to order etc Lunch was at the beach grill - fish , chicken, burgers and salad all fresh not sure what more youd want. Think simple but nice. Cocktails and drinks excellent Wine out of bottles - lots of people drinking it. Make sure you have a BBC ... The staff really make this place they are so friendly most have worked there 25 years or more so that tells you something about the place. We also met other guests who had been coming to this resort for 30 years! They now split their trip doing Half at this hotel and half at Galley Bay ... which is about 8000 per week ....but they still enjoy coming here first. If you like modern contemporary hotels you probably wont like it here but If you like laid back, friendly, low key, smaller resorts then you will enjoy it. The beach is OUTSTANDING Paddle boards and kayaks for use when you feel like it. The plus points to this hotel are - 1)Amazing safe quiet beach 2) Beach bar and grill are right near your sun loungers on beach so everything is easy and close by 3) Staff are so friendly creating a nice atmosphere 4) Warri Pier is a special and unique spot to dine at in the evening - you can see huge fish swimming underneath We would come here again because the beach is just amazing very unspoilt. It was good value for money, the food and drinks were of good quality, we also liked strolling up the beach past Sandals to Anas for lunch and out to the floating Tiki Bar.

The front desk name Denise is not suited for hospitality job. She was unhelpful, grumpy and arrogant. We had over 10 hours flight and we arrived at check in being harassed bec she couldnt not read the reservation very well.

Stayed at the Halcyon Starfish hotel in Dickensen Bay for a week from beginning of September. Situated next to the lovely sandy beach, with gentle waves and beautiful sunsets. Perfect time of year to visit as just out of season so not many visitors and very relaxed atmosphere. Hotel facilities 3-star basic but clean and well staffed. We stayed all-inclusive,good value for money as buffet-style food is plentiful and tasty with lots of familiar English recipes, and the bar has wide range of local cocktails and beers. The maid will spray the room with insect repellant for those of us who do not like spiders..none seen at all on our trip. Bring ear plugs as the tree frogs are really loudly musical all through the night! Evening entertainment was ok with a DJ playing Carribbean songs and requests, maybe a live band once or twice would have livened up the atmosphere, but on the whole this was a great value holiday and we are very likely to return.

    • Worst holiday ever!

Just came back from wasting 10 days and 5 grand on a family package holiday booked via British airways to STARFISH HALCOYN HOTEL DICKENSION BAY. I arrived with my teenage children at the hotel and we were all in shock. First impression was are we at the right place? The children said mom is this a punishment. The hotel was so dated. We checked in to the standard rooms 405 and 406 that was very basic with old furniture and the bathroom had cracked sink and tiles and the floor had permanent foot print marks. It got worse daily , no activities night or day. A little music by the bar near the beach and one yes one table tennis. The food was the same very basic and no many options. We went out to eat most days.if your looking for a hotel with life and flavour look elsewhere. I have travelled the world and this is my worse ever.! During my stay I met three lovely people SANDY and BRENDA the best house keepers. Love them, they made such an effort to keep our rooms tidy and clean I spend most days chatting with them. And the chef COLAN who listened to my moaning every day about the poor quality of the food. He did his best to make a good omelette in the mornings. This is a 2* basic hotel for those who want a place to sleep and breakfast in the morning. If that's what you want go for it! Not for me it's a waste of time and money. So many guest were complaining that they cant wait to get out of there. I NEED A HOLIDAY TO GET OVER THIS ONE AWFUL experience!

    • Another excellent visit

We just returned after our may 25-june1 trip. Nothing is new to report yet with new ownership. We arrived via Air Canada and were put in a taxi quickly for the 10-15 min shuttle to hotel. Checkin took 5 min as Debbie who set up our wedding at halcyon was at the front desk to greet us. Dolsten, one of the long time great bartenders walked by and said welcome home! Our room this time was 283 which was a ground level garden room straight down from reception towards beach. Room as our others clean. Ac was cold. Room had a loveseat, mini fridge, coffee maker, king bed, flat screen TV and desk. Room is dated and is due for some refurbishing here there but the bed was very comfy. Hotel was not that busy so no issue getting beach chair or hut. Hotel should invest in machine to clean the beach as it is time consuming to rake beach of debris that washes in and it didnt get done enough but the it is a great beach to go into or walk along. I'm not sure why anyone complains about the food. It's not a huge hotel and dont expect 20 options at all meals but breakfeast is served daily from 7am and you have selection of fruit, bread, jams, peanut butter, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, pancakes,French toast, cereals, and a omelette station where Egbert made fantastic ones for me daily. Lunch weather permitting was outside near ocean and bar. You had burgers, hotdogs French fries daily avail and veggies, rice, chicken macoronni and of course a daily fish. Also salads and sandwich station. Bar opens 10am and prior to that there is water station and coffee machine. Lots of great drinks. They only have 1 blender and when people want frozen drinks it can be slow and or if only 1 bartender. They used to have pre made frozen drink machine which probably broke and they need again. Dinner moves around and again a fantastic assortment of food nightly and always 1 fish avail. There is a ala carte menu for extra cost when dinner is at the pier. We were happy with the food served. Fantastic red wine from Chile is the house wine. Wifi on the resort and worked quite well for us around beach and pool and lobby. Was bit spotty in our room but was no real issue as we dont hang out there much. A big shout out to Dave who is full of energy and you will know its Dave when you hear his laugh and calling out all you lazy people it's time for aqua aerobics lol.He is a wealth of info and can give you lots of tips and help to make your trip great. Go see him. He is great management material as he is all customer service!! Many different vendors will ask if your interested in day trips, jets ski, island boat cruise etc so you will have lots of options. A lady on the beach everyday is Evelyn who makes necklaces etc. She is great and helps the hotel by cleaning up collecting glasses and more and the hotel should employ her or take care of her more. We watched her with a young boy guest who was fascinated by the beads and necklaces and she spent a hour or so with him on more then one occasion. So if your the type who needs 5star service rooms then go next door to sandals and pay 3times the price. If you like 3star price but complain and expect pile more then you too go elsewhere and get off tour wallet. If you want friendly people, clean room, good food and on great beach and can accept a older quiet hotel then this place is it. Once they renovate prices surely will go up but if you can get a good deal on tour trip here then enjoy. We will be back again and thanks to the entire staff for a relaxing holiday.
