are two security guards who are trained to make sure no unwanted person enters. Grand Mercury Hotel has one of the largest lobby/reception hall I have seen. The rooms are fairly big size with modern shower. The windows cannot be opened and therefore no balcony. However, the view of the Urumqi city is fantastic. Nearby famous place is Red High Park. There is a big mall of over 500 stores and anything one wants, one can get it. For quick bite there are couple of restaurants on the main road. The Hotel itself has Chinese restaurant which serves good menu. Price wise, North Americans and Europeans will find it reasonable but the rest will find price stiff. The disappointing thing I experienced was poor English at the reception. Three girls were there to serve the clients but none spoke English. When I could not understand what they were speaking, I asked for the Manager. He spoke 25% English. Very poor marks for a 5 stars hotel (they claim). Another bad point is that the hotel is built some 100 meters on the hill. So to catch a taxi from the nearby main road, one has to walk down or walk up to the hotel when taxi drops at the main road. Probably taxi cars are not allowed except by receptionist calling for them. Well then taxi is very expensive. Local taxis from the road-side are much cheaper and you get as many as you want. My recommendation is 50-50. Price per regular room is in the vicinity of US $100/-. That is OK but lack of English language was badly missed.

Although there are only 3 in house restaurants in the hotel, I still managed to settle my dinner for the entire week of my stay in the hotel. If you are Didi user, make sure you search using " and look for the" Parking " location, else the Didi will wait at the main road instead of picking you up right in front of the hotel entrance. Only improvement needed is perhaps the pillows... Just toooo soft..

We stayed at this hotel as part of a group tour through China. The good - big room with plenty of shelf space incl the bathroom. Breakfast was excellent but get there early to avoid the rush. Hotel offers money change for major currencies and they use the Bank Of China exchange rates. We changed AUD$ into RMB. The bad - very poor lighting, the bed was on a platform that extended beyond the bed and you knocked your shins against, aircon control ineffective so room was quite hot during the night for sleeping, the power went off three times each night and when it comes back on, the door bell rings and some lights flash on for a moment, there is a kettle but no tea of coffee or cups/mugs provided, shower was over a bath and the pillows were extremely soft. Our room was definitely not any where near 5 star.

Stayed 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The room - large with very comfortable bed and pillows. Dining - buffet breakfast was very good with choices for every nationality. The buffet dinner was superb, again with a great variety including a large range of seafood. The staff were excellent and Mr Heineken should be very proud. We did not dine outside the hotel so cant comment on places nearby. We walked to the international market and back, but it would be easy to catch a bus nearby.

Hotel is old but kept clean. Its rated as a 5 star hotel which is definitely overrated. We only stayed there for one night and while the room is old it had all the necessary amenities. Breakfast is not that nice and it is difficult to get a taxi and the concierge is not very helpful. In general the staff are looking demotivated and are not looking after the guests well.
