    • So beautiful

I drove from Gallup to see the canyon. I only had about half a day. I was told to drive the south rim and start from Spider Rock and work my way back. The pictures on the south rim are better in the afternoon and the north rim in the morning, so I've been told. Pictures are also better on sunny day without clouds shading the rock walls. Spider rock is beautiful. There is a trail out to see spider rock. Part of it is flat, probably ADA accessible. The last part of it requires going through some rocks to get to the next platform. I heard someone say that had been on a jeep ride that they didn't get to go as far as spider rock, which is as far as you can drive in on the south rim. I was able to stop at all 7 south rim stops. There is only one place to hike, white house ruins, on the south rim. Since this is Navajo land, the park not very open. Other than this one hike, you must be with a guide to be on the canyon floor. This hike is 2.5 miles roundtrip and most of it seems to be the hill. I didn't have time to hike it. This is the only national park that is both a park and native american land. I saw the Navajo selling their arts at various overlooks.

A beautiful uncrowded spot to visit. The cliff dwelling are beautiful. The red sandstone makes it even better. We drove along the rim taking in the scenery at numerous overlooks. The highlight is a hike down to the cliff house. It is a 600 ft elevation gain. It was a moderate trail even though it looks intimidating. On a hot day it would be a hot hike. Take water. We hiked at around 60 degrees and it was shorts and t shirt. You are at the bottom of the canyon looking up at the White House ruins. Quite nice. There are numerous Navajo vendors at some of the stops selling, jewelry, are, pottery etc. most of the art is very good and fairly priced. We met a local woman artist on our hike and she needed a ride to her house. We dropped her off and later she brought numerous pottery pieces to our campground. We were not pressured but we did buy a piece. The price was very good and she was negotiable. We were please with the purchase. Later, in a store we saw her goods at twice the price we paid. Nice memory.

If the road was better, Monument Valley would get 5 stars. If you stop and think about what natural forces created this area, you become very humble. But the road is very bad in most places, nice gravel in one spot and concrete where maybe water flows heavily. Theres a great gift shop and visitor center. We didnt stay at the hotel or eat in the restaurant.

We drove the Rim after an excellent private tour with a Navajo Guide (we used Beauty Way) and were able to get the perspective from above, vs the Tour that was below. It rained during our drive around the rim, but that just gave us a chance to see some waterfalls and rainbows. To me Canyon de Chelly was a key highlight of a 2+ week road trip in Arizona and Utah It helped having the private tour first, since we then were able to spot more when we looked down into the Canyon

    • Great Views and Navajo History, all without Many Tourists

This canyon is unique in that it is a National Monument area, but the land is still owned by the Navajo, and some actually still live in the canyon floor itself. Yes, there are a lot of Navajo venders at most of the North and South Rim overlook parking lots, but this place is one of the few that hasn't been raped and pillaged from them, so I found it neat to see the goods they were peddling and better yet to interact with them. I also took a 4 hour canyon floor tour with Thunderbird Lodge and our Navajo guide, who grew up in the canyon, was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his Navajo heritage. This canyon has unique views all around, including the Indian ruins, and best of all it receives little tourist pressure.
