Arrived mid afternoon, door on latch, note on reception desk to call a mobile number. Left message, owner appears 10 minutes later. Asks if we have a reservation? Explains the air-conditioning appears not to be working in the rooms. Outside temperature 39 degrees. Opened window over looking the river to try and cool down. Owner turns up at room and informs us that the room opposite is 3 degrees cooler, would we like to move. We decline. I ask when the bar opens, he replies that it is always open for residents. We go down to the bar at 18:00 and sit on the balcony over the river. I ask for a cider, he replies he has none, I ask for a beer, he replies he has none, my wife asks for a gin and tonic, he replies he has no gin, she asks for a vodka and tonic, he replies he has no tonic, she asks for a vodka and orange which he had. I ask what else he had and returns with a bottle of local champagne which he says I can have to make up for the air-conditioning problem. The next night he informs me he has beer and serves up a small bottle of Heineken which could have been colder. My wife has a vodka and orange. Another beer appears. I ask if I could have a glass of orange with ice, he replies that my wife has drunk all the orange. I end up with a glass of apple juice. Breakfast was nice. We were not charged for this because of the air-conditioning problem I had reserved a parking space as the hotel is right on the street. There is a small area alongside the hotel for parking 4 cars only. Luckily I had one of the spaces. Hotel great location for centre of city.

    • Lovely long weekend stay

We have just returned from a four night stay at The Grand. The hotel has been fairly recently refurbished and is simple but stylish. We very much enjoyed our stay and the welcome by all including the owners and staff was excellent. We had a lovely room overlooking the river. The bathroom was excellent although there was nowhere to stand the shower/shampoo bottles. The continental breakfast was plentiful and served in the dining room or on the terrace. The Grand is excellently placed for the sights and restaurants of Castres. Like many hotels in France, tea making facilities were not available in the room. Should we visit Castres again, we will stay at the Grand.

We stayed here for a trip to see our rugby team play Castres. We stayed one night. The welcome we got by whom I can only assume was the manager was friendly when we arrived. The parking is limited however as we were only they for 1 night it wasnt a problem for us. As per another review, the corridors out of the lift to the hotel rooms are extremely low lit. You have to get close to the doors to read the door number. The room was quite hot when we got in but the windows open quite wide so it wasnt an issue. The room was modern and very clean. The only thing the room was missing was a kettle to make a cuppa in the morning. Oh and we only had 1 set of towels. We told the manager when we went out, however my French is extremely limited and his English was ok but not enough to understand that we needed another towel. But again its not something I felt the need to shout about. When we got back late in the evening the night reception guy was very kind and prepared some bread, cheese and meat for us. This cost 10 The following morning, we got up and showered ..... the shower head is just attached to the taps, theres no where for it to hold up so you can stand in the bath, so it was a case of sitting in the bath with the shower on! Theres a decent hairdryer which is great to see. We went down for breakfast, this consisted of yoghurts, fruit, choice of croissant, brioche and bread. Then some bread, cheese and ham. Coffee and orange juice. All of the food was delicious and the service was great. Check out was smooth and off went went on our way. All in all this is a great little hotel for a fleeting trip. Just lacking with the kettle, detail with the towel and a shower you can stand under.

    • Good location but disappointed

Thishotel does not reflect the warm, well equipped hotel described on its website. The positives are good location and comfortable bed but the negatives outweigh these. The website talks about the restaurant and bar and both of these do not exist. Also the breakfast is very limited. The decor is very dark and the establishment is quite sombre. There are a few coned off parking spaces next to the property but I wouldnt rely on a space in peak season!

This place is lovely! The hotel manager very kind and we the rooms very comfortable and quiet. Best location to explore the city by walk with park "jardin remarquable" just 2min by walk, but there is also parking and golf is only 10min by car. The rooms boast great cosmetics(Grain de pastel) and we had view over the "Venice". The place is also disabled and pet friendly. Thumbs up!
