    • Great location but.......

      Reviewed 21 September 2019

The main reason for booking this place was the location and the opportunity to see live badgers - and we werent disappointed! A magnificent treat that I will always treasure. This is a prime location, close to Windemere and in between Ambleside and Grasmere with a lake on the doorstep & Wordsworths home next door (almost). The beer is well kept and tasty with friendly helpful staff and the food in the evening was fantastic. Every meal I had was amazing and really nicely cooked. This wasnt always the case with breakfast which looks like a fantastic menu with lots of options but there didnt seem to be as much care taken in the morning. For example veggie sausage not properly cooked (cold in the middle). Nevertheless there were plenty of options if a cooked breakfast wasnt ideal. The room we stayed in, however (Bluebell), was very disappointing. The room is painted a very dark blue (but with patches where it has been scraped off) making it a bit gloomy and the curtains look like they are threadbare and fifty years old. It wouldnt take much to just brighten the room up but as it stands it feels jaded and neglected. Im not 100% convinced about the cleaning either. And Im sure the luminescent green exit light isnt required as with only one door to the outside it is clear where the exit is.

    • Very cool

We're just back from a really nice stay for a wedding. We really enjoyed our time here, the rooms are large. The beds comfy and bedding towels etc spotless and soft. The food is absolutely fab and the portions huge. The badger cam and viewing is a great draw. It's a lovely old fashioned bar and hotel. The management is lovely. Very well appoint ed rooms. Amazing location. Brilliant Breakfast. Wish you had mentioned The ghostly residents it was a pleasant surprise, but would have liked a heads up. The first night sadly there was some tension amongst the staff which made us a little uncomfy but these things happen, and the hotel could do with a bit of tidy and some investment, although it's late in the season so can be forgiven. But otherwise really lovely stay, and we would love to come again.

    • An amazing place to stay!

We drove past this hotel on our way to find accomodation in Keswick and are so glad we spotted the Badger Bar sign. I went online and called Paul the Manager who was very helpful and said to drop by to see the rooms he had available. We were not disappointed! We stayed in the Dora Room for our first night and staff moved our bags to a different room for the second night. All staff were helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Place was spotless and food incredible. We had vegan breakfast both mornings which was declicious and a nice touch on our second morning was that they had got us some vegan butter (even though we managed with other spreads and hadn't requested it). We were there to celebrate an anniversary and we couldn't have picked a better place. We're already working out when we can re-visit as we didn't want to leave!

    • A 17th century bar with 21st century comfort right next to Wordsworth's home!

Room was spacious as per the pictures and had a good view. Refurbished bathrooms with excellent amenities. Housekeeping was spotless. Breakfast room is lovely with assigned tables so you don't need to wait for a seat. Sumptuous spread with many options - our favorite was the Cumberland breakfast. Staff were super helpful and courteous. Ample space for parking. The bar food at the inn was delicious with a wide spread of beer from the taps! Carpets were a little tired, a firmer mattress would be great but overall loved our stay!

    • Would love to go back

A really lovely hotel, the bedrooms are all different and unique in their own way - we had the Dora Bedroom if I remember correctly. The bar and restaurant is a really nice addition to the hotel because it's old and has been kept in really good condition. I would recommend eating here if you're staying in the hotel. There's a nice small area at the front of the hotel where you can sit outside and have a drink if the sun is out. The staff we came across whilst at the hotel were all friendly and accommodating. The hotel is still in a good location in terms of being near to Ambleside centre, it's a short-ish scenic walk away. There's also parking here for guests which is an added bonus as there is very limited parking in Ambleside centre.
