We enjoyed our drive through the hot desert lands. Very scenic and unaltered desert flora from thousands of years ago.

Mojave national preserve is a beautiful desert landscape park. There are a lot of Joshua trees in the park, a lot more than Joshua Tree national park. The lava tube is cool but make sure you pick the right route there

I've been to LA and Vegas many times but never driven in between. For my first trip I decided to take scenic route through Mojave and Joshua Tree. At the start of August it is HOT (46C/115F) so I wouldn't suggest any long periods outside but the views and the changing landscape are pretty awesome. For 10-15 miles I was trying to figure out why the mountain in the distance was two different shades, but after stopping in Kelso at the visitor's center I figured out it was the sand dunes in front of a mountain. There's an informative 15-minute film inside the visitor's center. You could easily spend a day or two inside the preserve but in the blast furnace of summer may not be the best time! I'm already planning a return trip in the spring or fall that includes Mojave and Joshua Tree. Unlike national parks the preserve is free.

We took a detour through Mojave National Preserve on our way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. It was definitely worth it. The nature was amazing with long straight roads, desert, rocks and mountains.
