As others have said, it is hard to find, but oh when you do! You can feel the passion on the collector and we felt privileged to be invited in his home. What a beautiful collection; so well organized and displayed. The "tour" provided plenty of information without being overwhelming. We were allowed ample time to look and photograph the collection. Highly recommended! I collect tiles and we were the last to leave after an informative discussion on where to purchase tiles in Sicily. (Side note - we tried the antique market but couldn't find what we were looking for - but did find a wonderful dealer in Enna.) Majolica tiles are thick and heavy so be prepared if you want to haul them around with you on a long Sicilian journey.

    • Behind an unmarked door lies a true gem of a collection!

First: the location. On Via Garibaldi, you will not see a marker for number 11, but instead you will see a very dilapidated, unassuming door, and to the right, an intercom, with a button for the Stanze al Genio. After making your reservation ahead of time (either by phone or email), you just show up at the proper time, ring the buzzer, and after checking your name, they will buzz you in. Second, the timing: as I recall, the English tour is given at 3pm and the Italian at 4pm. The tour is given in the home of the owner of the collection, led by the person who is the buyer for the collection, who is knowledgeable not just of the tiles, but also the furniture and other items displayed in the rooms (for example, one room has a series of shelves with antique toys). The room where you gather after entering the building is also a bit of a gift shop, with refrigerator magnets and paper reproductions of tiles for sale. But of course the main reason for being there are the tiles covering the walls of most of the rooms in the main floor of the building. If you are at all interested in the decorative arts or at least in Majolica ceramics, you will be thrilled seeing the variety and excellence of this collection.
