    • Friendly, homely, comfortable and the best oatcakes ever!

Having never been to Scalpay before and always up for a "new" island, as well as being attracted by the name, we could not have chosen better for our 3-night stay! The room was huge, the [4-poster] bed comfortable and the en-suite clean with big fluffy towels which miraculously seemed to renew themselves all neatly folded into a basket every day. Breakfast was excellent and the home-made oatcakes the best I have ever tasted - we were well set-up for the day and Margaret left a continental-style breakfast out for us on our last morning when we had to leave soon after 6:00am to check in for the early ferry. Being only a 10-15 minute drive to Tarbert, Hirta House was ideally situated and a beautiful and relaxing family home, complete with pets who were mostly undemanding but happy for a fuss if one happened to be passing. (Except Mr Saatchi, who seems to be in charge of things and who laid in wait across the top of the stairs so he could not be ignored! :) ) We would definitely recommend Hirta House and hope to stay there again one day. Thank you Margeret and Kenny for making us so welcome.

Run by a couple both of whom are tremendous characters, this place is a great example of a truly individual bed and breakfast. Spacious, and distinctively decorated, everything is well-maintained and calculated to put you at your ease. Two highlights - the guest lounge with a fantastic range of meaty reading material. In itself a reason for booking a longer stay! The other, the amazing home-cooked breakfast including amazing oatcakes, taken in a convivial atmosphere around one large table. As Margaret's apron declared, she certainly was "on fire" in the kitchen that morning, and doubtless all others! Oh and the sunset - not guaranteed for sure, but that night was truly memorable..

We stayed here in September for only 1 night as that was all that was available. It was a good location on Scalpay with easy access to the bistro at the harbour and for exploring the lighthouse. We felt very welcome and had a very convivial and tasty breakfast sharing the table with 2 other couples. There was a lovely conservatory and sitting room with a good view. Would like to have stayed longer

What an amazing find just across the bridge from Isle of Harris to Scalplay in the Outer Hebredes. Kenny and Margaret were just wonderful hosts and the room was outstanding. For those who care, the bathroom/shower was also excellent - a feature we found rare in many Scot B&Bs. We arrived in a blowing rain (it's Scotland!) and loved sitting in the glass walled sun room to take in the view of the bay. The parlor with leather sofa and seating was also warm and inviting. Scalplay is only a 15 minute drive from Tarbert restaurants and the ferry but seems like a world away. Make this a destination.

We were blown away by this lovely little BnB. The hosts were welcoming and friendly, including Barack Obama (the dog!). The bed was SOOO comfortable and the room was clean and well kept. The breakfast was excellent (stornoway black pudding to die for) and there was no rush to get us out. Thanks and we hope to see you again!
