    • Beware the chemical sprays

      Reviewed 11 June 2019

Course itself in poor shape--can't tell the fairways from the rough--but more important, came to one hole and were faced with spraying equipment and men in hazard masks working right alongside us as we played. Smelled so bad we could taste it--made us nauseous. Asked what was being sprayed but only got generalities for responses. Said they were spraying for dandelions, but there was a lot more work due on the course than spraying for weeds. Avoid it!

Hadnt played the course in a dozen years or so. Beautiful layout. Greens are in excellent condition. Price was reasonable. Some browning on the fairways which can be blamed on the lack of rain and intense heat this summer. Very enjoyable round! Will definitely play again!

    • Best Greens on PEI. A must play

      Reviewed 06 June 2018

I Traveled from Florida to play golf on PEI and Avondale have the best greens on the Island. They are very true and fast. Their fairways are in great shape as you never have a bad lie and the golf course is fair. It is welcoming to all skill levels with their variety of tee boxes. They cleared some trees out to make it more scenic and make things more interesting. The fountain pond on #7 is a nice touch. Very reasonably priced for the condition of the course. A must play when planning a trip to the Island.

Despite its continued downward spiral over the past three seasons, ever hopeful, I decided to give Avondale one more chance. Last year was a bad year for the course and the neglect was glaringly obvious this Spring. It's greens were in rough shape, as were the fairways, tee boxes and sand traps. It's not as if the new course manager isn't trying to make things better or is unaware of the problems. He's hired a new experienced head groundskeeper but she's only part-time and resuscitating Avondale will be a fulltime job. I made the mistake of writing a mildly critical article about the precarious nature of PEI golf in the local newspaper. Avondale's owner didn't take kindly to my comments and banished me from the course. It seems to me that he can ill afford to turn away paying customers while the course is reputed to be chronically underutilized. It's too bad because it was a really nice course.

Tourists or locals really like this Golf Course. Your ball striking has to be reasonably good as you must stay in the individual fairways as there is no bailout areas. Its very fair though to the Golfer. Some of the super long hitters sometimes complain that they have run out of fairway especially on slight doglegs. However, they make shorter clubs for a reason and if you use them, there will never be a problem with your game. Each hole has different Character's, different styles, this is what makes this course a fun place to go to.
