I guess still not situated since hurricane. No building still and not under construction. Seems hurricane money not getting here for whatever reasons. Trails not to good. Grass along road not to well cut. Lookout tower and walkways were in good shape with nice views. Could be an awsome place if it was properly maintained.

We spent two half days birding this area, and it was well worth our time. It was uncrowded when we visited. Highly recommended.

Greeted by a huge alligator! Great variety of land, marsh and seashore. Did see the Whoopers from the south side when we stayed at Goose Island State Park and took their bird tours.

We visit Rockport every winter and always visit the refuge. Best time is late evening last couple of hours until dark. All the animals begin to emerge. Slow drive thru the whole refuge is a must.

We visited in late March knowing most of the cranes had gone. We saw 2 pair of whooping cranes but the Sandhill cranes seemed to already be gone. We saw the cranes near the Heron Flats Trail. We also saw 6 large gators near the trail so be aware when out hiking. We saw some egrets and deer in the park as well.
