Rimu Lodge was a delightful surprise hidden away just a few minutes from the centre of Hokitika. Here Sue-Ellen has created a subtly luxurious retreat featuring spacious, elegant rooms with ensuite bathrooms, a tasteful, cosy lounge area and a lovely breakfast space. The common area features a roaring open fire and access to the deck with glorious sunset views and a wonderful connection with the landscape. Breakfast is a feast of home-made, self-serve treats followed by eggs to order. This will set you up for a walk down to the old gold mine site down the road. In the evening, it is a short stroll (via the glow-worm dell, with torches provided by the lodge) to the friendly, cheerful local pub that serves surprisingly good food. Sue-Ellen, a charming and informed host, ensures that every detail is taken care of, bringing blankets to the deck should the weather turn chilly and providing decanters in the lounge for a post-dinner nightcap. She is a font of local information and ensures that your stay at Rimu Lodge and the surrounding area is enjoyable and memorable.

Location is excellent. Sue Ellen is a wonderful host. The facility is clean, well decorated and peaceful just doesn't do the place justice. A calmness comes over you as you enter this wonderful place. The views are terrific. The comfortable furniture, the wonderfully hot showers, beds, just great. Be sure and greet Monty the dog when you arrive.

    • Exceptional in every area

This is a wonderful place, great hospitality, superb facilities with every item you might need and forgot, exceptional views and clean modern, specious rooms. Breakfast is more than you need, the roaring fire each night in the relaxing lounge is an added treat. Your hostess is super knowledgeable about the area and helps with dinner reservations, directions, and recommended activities. You could not ask for more from a lodge in NZ. Highly recommend, we will come again every chance we get! PS Added benefit if you need a short dog fix, Monty will give you a warm greeting, and only if you are interested!

Helen was an excellent hostess. The room was wonderful and the view from the deck and common room was extraordinary. Helen had a fine recommendation for dinner and also suggested that we stop and see the nearby glow worm grotto. Wonderful. Breakfast was excellent. We easily could have spent another day here and in the area.
