This review is based on a hotel that charges over US$ 1,000 per night. So, some of the minor issues that may be acceptable at other places should not happen here. The check-in process was smooth and our room was ready within a few minutes. The front desk even offered a complimentary welcome drink. They will expect to run your credit card for US$250/day incidentals deposit. At the end of the stay the actual amount is charged. Remember that all charges are actually made in Mexican pesos, so the amount in dollars that the credit card will charge can vary by up to 5% from the rough estimate at the hotel. The room we reserved was very nice, with a main floor that covered a living area, an extra mattress at ground level for relaxing and a big bathroom/closet area. The size was more than adequate for our needs. There are heavy curtains all around to keep the light out, as most walls are actually glass. The top floor (accessible by a stair outside the room) has a private pool with jets, couches, lots of green and a net to relax if you are not afraid of heights! The hotel is green, meaning that they strive to keep a low carbon footprint and use natural insect repellents and the such. It is somehow defeated by the fact that Tulum does not have a power grid, so there are diesel generators running 24/7. The room service was good, everything worked and was clean and well maintained. The front desk service is also good, with a concierge being assigned to each room. This person will take care of any needs, reservations and the like. Our stay included a wet-spa pass, which we enjoyed with steam rooms, sauna, pools and hot/cold showers. Breakfast is included, with a good selection of hot and cold plates, juice, coffee and fruits. It can be had in the room or by the beach, enjoying the view and the fresh air. I still dont understand why they would look cheap by charging extra for a second cup of espresso. It is not their fault, but the beach was covered with sea weed (Sargassum) during our stay. On one of the days we could see three guys trying to pick it up and wheel-barrow it away, a loosing battle. At this price range we would have expected some heavy machinery to take care of it every night, so at least there would have been a fresh start in the morning. The hotel next door seemed to do that and their beach looked a lot better. We could not use the beach or sea, as the amount of sea weed made it unbearable. The pools are just a couple of stretches of water that, under other circumstances, would look like decorative fountains. It was the only option available to mitigate the heat. The lounge chairs on the beach were comfortable and clean. There seemed to be enough, so at any time of the day we could go down and find a spot. The restaurant at the front of the hotel (Ocumare) was good, with great food at reasonable prices. The only objection was that any bottle of wine, nothing too fancy, started at US$ 100+. Still, worth trying. Bear in mind that everything is extra: from water on the beach (U$10) to food and drinks. A bottle of water, some guacamole and a little salad will be around U$40 when delivered by friendly waiter. Overall a nice place, well maintained and good service. Given the cost/benefit would we go back? I doubt so.

We had the pleasure of enjoying dinner on the beach at Be Tulum. First of all, the staff from the front desk to the groundskeeper, to the bartender, and finally to our server was absolutely the best we have ever experienced. Our server, Carlos Ramirez is the secret weapon at Be Tulum; he is so awesome that we actually went back the next day to eat again and specifically asked for him. Carlos knew the menu like he was the chef and made superb recommendations. We really enjoyed the tuna steak and the vegetable tacos. There was a lot of thought put into the seasonsings and it made the tastes explode in your mouth (in a good way). You absolutely must try the restaurant at Be Tulum and ask for Carlos!

After reading several reviews just before our arrival, I wasn't expecting more than a pretty place with good food. I have no idea how anyone could feel the service was sub-par here. I travel a lot. I love personal attention, friendly staff and great service. Be Tulum delivered every single day. Our coffee and breakfast was more efficient than most places I've stayed at. I never felt the food (or the precious coffee) took too long. In fact, it was the opposite. Drinks on the beach were served with a smile. We felt well taken care of without being hovered over. The front desk was on it anytime we asked for assistance or recommendations. House-keeping was thorough and chose times when we were out of the room to clean. Tulum, over-all, is a pricier destination. So yes, you will spend money, but it's just like what you would spend in US. Though our room did not have a water kettle for tea or coffee, when we called room service for hot water, it arrived very quickly. Don't hesitate to choose this hotel. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on the strip.

Hotel concept, design, location, rooms are extraordinary and certainly worth the money spent (we stayed in villa 402). But. Do not expect service, Be Tulum is more like super exclusive Bed and Breakfast type of hotel. Think they feel strong monopoly position in premium segment and are not inclined to deliver premium service, why would they, people still come because premium is in scarcity here. Lots of little things we did not like on the service side that irritate: there was no EU adapter at reception (taken by other hotel guests) so they got one for us and wanted to charge 25 USD; recommended restaurants in Tulum which were super retail type of central location restaurants (did not match our request of the restaurant type); did not know what is happening in town in terms of recreational program/events -had to squeeze info by making them look it up in the internet; were not listening what we want from excursions/not very aware re excursions - said we cannot go to national park alone (Punta Allen as one of destinations there) and need guide to escort us there offered private tour, of course. Well, that is not true, guide is not obligatory to go to the park; sauna - first they say its free for 1 hour, then at the SPA reception they say we cannot use it unless we book a massage, then at hotel reception they say it is possible only during certain time slots. No major defaults, but fails come one after another and overall impression is that personnel is not informed, is too relaxed and is in nirvana mode together with the guests (I wish !). Sadly, my cell phone was stolen, left it outside the room next to our private swimming pool in our private area before going to bed and in the morning it was bye bye....should have warned that this happens here. Instead, upon check-in we were told that everything we leave at the hotel territory will be collected and returned. Someone from reception followed with comments later that all staff was checked and no phone was found- as if I care about the process. Overall conclusion: probably worth visiting for a short stay, just anchor yourself towards absence of service (for that price tag), keep your stuff inside the room.
