I take full responsibility for unrealistic expectations of this park. I grew up one hour north of here and fondly remember summers spent under the redwood trees of Big Sur. I came down earlier in the year on a scouting trip and checked out lots of places on the river for tent camping. I thought this park would be ideal. It was. Just not for me. No doubt the scenery and proximity of the river is its most endearing assets. We waited until mid September hoping the crowds would subside. Each night the park was full of visitors en route to other destinations. Lots of setting up late and taking down early to hit the road. Wonderful, happy folks to be sure; just too much action for us. Had a river site and access was great. Our own little path down to waters edge that cost $50 per night. Right next to us was a pretty large pile of concrete pilings from an old bridge and lots of bright orange construction netting to view. I hung the clothesline there and tried to pretend it wasn't there. It helped some. I sincerely liked all the park staff from check-in to cleaners to firewood sales at your door! Again lots of activity. Another thing is the fact that tent camping is not segregated from RV's with satellite dishes and generators running! Don't get me wrong; I've traveled on my bicycle, in cruise ships, four-star hotels, RV's and travel trailers. Most places allow some space between the various types of travelers. It helps keep everyone happy. Do come here for the beautiful trees, the river, well stocked store at Big Sur Lodge and wonderful and caring camp staff. Do not come here if you treasure tranquility.

Hello, we drove from Ventura to Monterey Bay via the Big Sur. The views were spectacular. The whole 6 plus hours drive had some breathtaking views. There were loads of vista points where you can park the car and enjoy the view. We totally enjoyed the drive.

We liked the park a lot but chose the wrong trail. We tried the Buzzard Roost . The was our error. I use a cane. It would be fine for an able bodied person. The brochure listed it as rugged but I thought I could do it. I was wrong!! The park has a lot of easier trails. I would like to go again and try a few of them.

    • Beautiful (Nature at its Best) - Lots of Hiking Trails - Hotel and Cottages in the Park for Overnight stay

My favorite place at this park is Big Sur Lodge. Its one of the few hotels located in the California State Park Systems. They also have cottages not too far from the lodge. I love sitting just outside the Big Sur Lodge and looking at the giant redwood trees. Ill usually eat lunch or dinner in their restaurant. The restaurant also has an outdoor patio for dinning. There are lots of hiking trails in this 1000 acres park. Perfect place to bring family and friends and spend the day with nature taking hikes or just stay near the hotel or cottage taking in the natural beauty. You dont have to stay overnight to enjoy this park. Purchase your vehicle entry pass for $10, park your car and follow the many trails and walking paths. Unfortunately, my favorite trail, Overlook Trail to McWay Falls was closed during my August 2019 visit. This is a spectacular half mile trail that ends at an overlook to the giant water fall, McWay Falls. Hotel staff said the trail will open later in the year or sometime in 2020.

What an amazing road trip! Its a bit longer of a drive than we anticipated, but the scenery is absolutely breathtaking! We got to see lots of sea lions and a spectacular view around every bend. Classic California Highway scenic beauty! Just be sure to fill up and eat first!
