    • Could Be Better But ...

We stayed here on night three of our Camino walk and had two rooms. This property was booked through a third party, Camino Ways, as we wanted to try a "country cottage" option. THE BAD: 1) Because it's a fairly significant uphill walk from Redondela (it would have added an additional 6+ kilometers to our day) we were told by Camino Ways that it had been arranged and paid for for us to call them from a central location, Los Amigos, for transport to Casa Rural As Chivas. We arrived in Redondela at approximately 4:30 pm and tried calling them for 1-1/2 hours and no one answered the phone. After a long day, the last thing we wanted to do was continue waiting any longer so we called a taxi at our own expense. When we arrived the family was outside yelling at "grandma" who was sitting there crying. Apparently this property is owned and managed by a family who were not getting along that day and their service suffered for it. No apologies for not answering the phone and we were clearly interrupting them from their fight and putting them out when we asked to check in. 2) Our room didn't have any towels but someone had conveniently left the linen closet in the hallway unlocked, so rather than walk back to the courtyard during the family fight, we helped ourselves to what we needed. 3) Our room was stifling hot. They turn off the air conditioning around 11:00 p.m. We thought it was possibly broken and suffered through the night - opening the window let swarms of bugs in so that wasn't an option. We found out in the morning that they control the room temperature/AC to the rooms INDIVIDUALLY and if if you complain they will turn the AC back on in your room. What??? Make sure you insist that they leave the air conditioning on! 4) If you're walking the Camino, it is not convenient to town. If you've planned a significant walk that day, you may want to select somewhere closer. THE GOOD: 1) If you decide to make the trek, it is fairly close to the Camino trail so you will be shaving off some walking distance/time when you depart in the morning. 2) The location is beautiful with nice views. It's in the country and you are able to spend some time enjoying nature without the activity of a town. 3) They have a clothes line available to hang and dry clothes if you need to wash/rinse anything in your sink or shower. 4) We stayed in Room 4 which we've been told has some negative reviews on TA but I've not found them so can't comment at this point, but Room 4 was spacious and had a decent sized bathroom. It was rather dark but we were just there for the one night so it wasn't inconvenient for us.

This place is not worth your time or money. We stayed there on our Camino Walk. Room was small and stuffy and none to clean, food was inedible and the hosts were very unwelcoming. A real disappoint. Plus in the morning, there was virtually no food left as a large group has eaten before us and the proprietress has asked us to wait.

We stayed here on day three of the Camino and wished we had not. We hiked up the long hill and were greeted by friendly staff. Shown to our room, we were told no hot showers as AC was being put in the rooms and the power was off. That was at 3pm. At 730pm we finally had a tepid shower. We made our way to the restaurant for dinner at 830pm. At 820pm the chef finally turned up and got to work. The first course was great but the two main courses were inedible meet dishes, and we felt the meat was beyond its sell by date. Plenty of wine though and the owner gave great service. Off to bed but the beds were so small that it meant a poor nights sleep for all. The photo shows the width compared to standard suitcase. I see the property has had bad reviews as well as good ones. I appreciate it is now under new management but they have a lot of work to do.

    • Worth the minor detour - so welcoming, so warm, so comforting

Another end of the day climb to a casa rural off the Caminho? Yep, and worth every step. It's not so much the rooms, although they were fine. It's the place and the people - the receptionist/bartender/server was absolutely lovely, and made sure we were comfortable, well fed and well wined. The house meanders around - rooms must have been added incrementally - and while not at all fancy, it charms and relaxes you. We were able to get our cycling clothes washed and dried by morning (thumbs way up), and next morning we found our server of the night before had alerted the morning server - her sister! - to our requests and we found that friendliness and helpfulness runs in the family. We would go back!

Stayed here with friends on our Camino walk from Porto to Santiago. It was not long after the half way point and it was one of the highlights of the trip. It is about 5km out of Redondela and it is slightly off the route. It is a bit of a climb but is well signposted. We were lucky to be there on a beautiful clear sunny day with the temperature in the mid 20's. Our room was excellent and after a clean up and quick exploration we were able to sit outside with a very cold beer and appreciate the beautiful scenery. It was good to meet fellow travellers there. We were joined in the evening by walkers who caught a cab from their accommodation to enjoy a an excellent meal along with some very good local wine. Breakfast was good and overall we had a first class time here. If I/we rewalk any of this route I would do my best to return.
