My boyfriend and I had to leave this hotel because the beds are SO uncomfortable that he had back pain after just 10 minutes of lying on it. The hotel staff were incredibly rude and offered no solutions, other than giving us one measly additional pillow, which did not help. Additionally, the hotel is falsely advertised online and we were very disappointed with not only the old beds, but the tiny pool, poor wifi, loud hallways (you can hear everything from inside the room, especially those upstairs), apparent lack of a restaurant, and distance from the citycentre, among others (i.e. rude staff). The receptionist refused to reimburse us, but not only that, she also refused to contact the manager or the owner, and wouldn't give us the contact info either. That seemed very, very suspicious to us. Eventually, after being yelled at by the receptionist to the point where I was almost crying, we decided to leave without getting our money back for a FOUR NIGHT STAY, and the staff didn't even offer to call us a taxi! We had to walk with our luggage to a nearby hospital where the staff spoke English, and they kindly called us a cab. We considered cutting our holiday short and leaving the country, that's how bad this hotel is. But instead, we were fortunate enough to get a lovely room at Four Points by Sheraton, where we had a great time. To anyone considering staying at Hotel Villa del Bosco, have a look at Four Points by Sheraton first and then make your decision. The Four Points has very pleasant and helpful staff, a nice pool, access to the sea, strong wifi, a restaurant and two bars offering additional food options, and a shuttle that runs to the citycentre regularly. Oh, and the bed we got there was a California King, it was unbelievably comfortable and helped my boyfriend's back problems massively! The Four Points gave us 6 pillows, by the way.

Yes the hotel is a little way from the city but they do provide free scheduled schuttle service to the inner city, but that aside I would not hesitate to return Hillaria, Antonio , Giuseppe, Sanjay and Ansel the driver, the breakfast and restaurant staff were an absolute delight to deal with the rooms were cleaned to a high standard and they were very comfortable. Hopefully get to visit again.

    • Great little find

So this is listed as four stars and basically its a lovely little hotel with excellent staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble. The negatives are the distance from the town centre 15-20 each way in a cab) there isnt anywhere to walk to locally for food) Although they provide a free shuttle it is on a first come basis and it is restricted to their timings, which are not constant or into the evening. For me four star should always mean coffee & tea making facilities in the room (which it doesnt) We did have them on day one when (due to a drain issues) we had an upgrade to the presidential suite. Although I definitely preferred the standard room we had for the rest of the week, in the old building. Breakfast was lovely, the pool was perfect and although we only ate twice in the restaurant, the food was delicious. The house red was also superb. A good base and great views of Etna but just a tad too far away.

We had more of an adventure than a holiday, the Sicilian people could not have been more helpful. The views from the hotel amazing. The management and staff at Villa del Bosco were excellent. Catania has excellent shopping and our favourite haunt was The Ice Caf.

    • Lovely hotel, shame about the location

VDBnext and Villa del Bosco are the same hotel, but two different buildings attached by a walk way. I booked via eBookers and asked for VdBnext (the modern side), but we were given an old fashioned room in the Villa del Bosco side. The room was okay and on the small side. The TV only has italian channels and they are awful! The bathroom was good, with a decent shower and very clean. There is a pool avaliable. It is not as big as it looks in the pictures and it is freezing! It's also quite shaded in the morning but it does pick up after about 11am. The hotel does provide beach towels if you ask. There are two beaches nearby when the private beach isn't available, which cost 15-20 euros to get to each way in the hotel shuttle! The hotel is situated on top of a huge hill and is quite far away from the town area. Honestly, the area around the hotel is a bit run down, as is most of Catania, and it isn't that nice. The hotel provides a free shuttle into town and back every day, which I think starts at 9/10am each day and stops at 6pm. If the driver is booked on another trip, there is no shuttle service which is really frustrating! He also does airport drop offs (30 on arrival, and 25 on departure). If you want dinner in town, most restaurants open at 8pm, so you have to have a mooch about, or find somewhere that does open sooner. Getting home isn't cheap. We were charged 15 euros to get back to the hotel, which does seem to be standard, but one evening we were charged 20 as a 'night rate'. We did try and use the local buses once, and it was horrendous. The hotel restaurant is nice, and while the food is good, it is rather expensive for what you get. There isn't much in way of lunch, but you can get an arancini or a pastry next door for a euro. The breakfast is good, but mainly cake or sweet based. There are scrambled eggs, (chicken?) sausage and bacon (grilled proscuito) which does get a little cold towards the end. The reception staff are brilliant! They were really cool when I told them my pink hair had stained the shower (!) and the sheets. Recommended and booked us a brilliant tour of Etna, and helped us organise a trip to Taormina. The historical centre of Catania is beautiful, but there isn't too much to do. Our trip to Taormina was really cheap at just over 8 euro per person by bus (not the horrendous local buses) and was really great idea. Would highly recommend this. Syracuse, and other nice cities are also quite cheap to get too. Overall, I would recommend this hotel, but I would say to factor in other costs, such as nightly taxi's home.
